hey guys new to your site and have a question bought a 94 ranger runs good but lacks power going down the road at high speed.now iam use to a v6 and this is a 2.3 runs good at low speed put wont hardley pull itself in 5th.is this normal for 2.3 with 3.45 rear end. does not throw any codes or does any lights come on.holds good oil pressure and water temp.i would be very greatful for help with this is normal.:icon_cheers:

Congratulations! You have a perfectly normal Ford 2.3L engine!

The 3.45 to 1 differential doesn't help your acceleration at all, but it keeps your gas mileage up (to a certain point) on highway cruising. If you were to go with 3.73 gears, you would notice increased acceleration at all speeds, but at the cost of higher RPMs and reduced fuel mileage. I personally love my 3.73 gears in the ranger.

Just as much, if you want to accelerate to a higher speed when in 5th, just downshift and give it what it's got. Check the Tech Library for some ideas on how to get more power and better use of that power if you're really looking to improve your engine's output.

Btw, Welcome to The Ranger Station!

normal, they like rpm... If you have a tach (if you don't, it's a bolt in upgrade if you grab a stock tach cluster from any '92.5-94 Ranger or Explorer, you can even swap your original speedo in the new cluster) keep it in the 2500rpm to 3000rpm range for best power and efficiency while cruising, for acceleration they peak power wise at 4600rpm so don't be shy, she'll live a very long life even if the 6200rpm rev limit is frequented... back when my tach work and I was still naturally aspirated I shifted at 5000rpm very often. I had various tire sizes and gear ratios over the years, even ran 28" tires with 3.08 gears for which 5th gear was useless but 4th was perfect for cruising at highway speeds

thanks for the info that makes me rest now

Put a 3.73 rearend gear in it, you'll be amazed how much those gears will wake it up.
