Hey guys, just bought a 99 ranger super cab 4wd automatic. Having some issues with it, first I have replaced the MAF sensor, plugs, wires, oil change, checked the air filter. When I'm going down the road lets say 60mph. If i press on the gas the engine will get louder and the rpms will go up however I do not go faster I stay consistently at the same speed. This will also tend to happen at lower speeds as well. Its like the engine is working will shift gears and everything but the truck doesnt move any faster than it was already moving. Some other things I have noticed, when I come to a stop and I take off theres like a bump, almost like a hard shift but the truck is not shifting gears. Any insight would be great!

if you have auto, your trans is slipping. not a good thing. most people get a new truck at this point.

I thought if the tranny was slipping it would not be moving at a constant speed? I'm honestly not used to automatic transmissions at all, all my other cars have always been manuals. I can also manually shift the truck from 2 to drive and turn the over drive off and the truck shifts, however there is not power change.

well slipping gets worse as it goes on. you may just have the start of it. only thing you can do is take it to a trusted shop

I agree take it to a good shop and expect to shell out $2k+ for a good rebuild. Make sure it includes a new torque converter. Unfortunately, Fords are not known for their good transmissions. What engine do you have?

I just figured he had a 3.0 that was so gutless it couldn't accelerate

It's really 2K for a rebuild? I paid 2300 for the truck!

I agree it sounds like a possible torque converter issue or worse. That being said don't you think we should at least suggest to him to check his tranny fluid level and maybe spend $50 and 2 hours and do a fluid drain and pump

Yah what he said, gotta do the steps in the right order.

Yep, what he said.

Theres a TSB out for that:

Triumphrider. I can not get the link right now but it reminded me that the 98, 99 & 2000 get input for the tranny from the VSS in the rear diff. They are known to screw up the shifting. Other symptoms could be the ABS lite and a screwy speedo. They take 10 minutes to change and cost $20. It might be worth it

Those are possiblities, but starting with greasing the yoke would be cheaper and eliminate a common problem on these.

Just an update guys, i took it to a mechanic, the granny was fine, the fuel filter and cat were both nearly clogged. It also had three bad o2 sensors. Runs and shifts great now and it feels like it grew some balls!
