I removed the transmission to replace the rear main seal on my 2.3 in my 88 ranger and had a hellava time getting the slave cylinder thru the firewall. In the process i broke off a flimsy clip on the top that held together the two halfs of the slave cylinder. I need to know if i can fix it, leave it alone or shell out the money for a new one.....the other question i have is what is the best way to reinstall the slave cylinder? when i took it out i was running into the brake booster and lines and the innerfender. any advice would be greatly appriciated..........

Thanks

That is the master cylinder. The slave is inside your transmission. Not sure why you took out the master to replace a rear main oil seal, (i just did it on my 4.0 V6). Isn't there a quick disconnect for the hydraulic line on the transmission?...not familiar with the 2.3.

In any event, i just replaced my master as well...seems to be the same thing. I also broke this clip, but it doesn't seem to matter. When you plug the wiring harness back in it will keep it from spinning around. If your really worried you could try to wrap some electrical tape. If you want to make it easier to put back in, try to disconnect that rod from the piston. There are two little tangs down inside that clip on a groove in the rod. If you use two small screwdrivers you can spread them and pull the rod out. NOTE: i am not talking about the C-ring that holds the piston in....leave that alone. Then install the cylinder, and pop the rod back in from the inside of the cabin. New masters come with the rod disconnected so you can do it this way.

Other option is to put it back in as a whole. It is doable....believe me...i had this pig out 3 times for bench bleeding...(hmmm maybe that's why you pulled the master with the tranny..to avoid that horrible project??)

If you yank some of those wire clusters off of the clips holding them on the plastic fender, and push the fender down it will buckle and give u a little room. A few choice swear words and some muscle will finish the job...but thats how you broke the clip in the first place im sure ;)

You were actually supposed to remove that switch from the pedal pushrod and leave that inside the truck.

I seriously think you made the job harder by doing that. It's not hard at all to bleed the clutch.

Find a M5OD from a newer ranger. Those have a quick disconnect fitting that makes taking the tranny out a breeze.
