New guy, new project: 1988 BII wheeler

nice welds. it took you an hour to drill 8 holes? Did u do it your self becuase i have drilled into some thick metal before but not for an hour.

One hour was: cutting the 4 shackles out of a single 6"x1.5' piece of plate with a dull band saw, drilling all 8 holes, deburring the holes, grinding down the corners, then sanding the all the edges down to a nice smooth radius to keep from damaging the bushings. I actually made pretty good time :D

Oh sounds like a pain so i guess i can agree lol

Hahaha yeah i always think stuff will only take a little bit of time... Then i realize there is tons of little stuff that i didnt think about haha

My girlfriend quickly learned that "it will only take an hour" means its a half day project haha

not into rockcrawling but that is is me. that b2 is pretty bad ass bult like fort knoxs too good job

Thanks guys :icon_thumby:

Im not really an exclusive rock crawler either, i love every part of offroading from rocks, mud, trails, hill climbs, etc. and this thing is built to pretty much do it all! Although i admit, its too short to be a really good mud bogger :D

I do have an update to make on this last weekends progress (around 10 pictures) but you guys are gonna have to wait til tonight haha ive got a midterm in a few hours :annoyed:

Sam

i need more pics of this beast

Hey guys! Midterm kicked my ass yesterday :buttkick: but its over now so back to the fun stuff :D

So heres what was done this weekend!

Got some used 4.5" lift coil springs from an xj for $50:

I also got the rear hangers in. They are .25" wall square tubing cut up and welded to some 1.75"x.25" wall DOM and then plated up with .25" plate. Here they are:

And welded to the frame:

Weld shot:

And i love that the back end of the frame on this thing is like swiss cheese with all the rivets removed, perfect for plug welding for extra support:

Now since i removed the rear crossmember the frame was pretty flimsy back there and if i flexed the leaf spring with it like that, my frame would probably turn in to a pretzel so i fixed that:

4"x4"x5/16 wall square tubing, i think that should do it :headbang:

Thick stuff!

Capped the ends off with more .25" plate:

Welded in (more plug welds!):

I also have a good strong mount for some d-ring shackles now.

SO that was saturday. Sunday i went to the 4wheel parts truckfest and bought myself a smittybilt xrc8 winch for this thing (only $268 brand new! :yahoo:). I took a couple of pics of it but forgot to upload them haha. Anyway, thats the update! Leaf springs and rear axle are pretty much ready to go in but of course the rain is back so it will have to wait. Thanks alot guys, hope you enjoy :icon_thumby:

its about time you got up some update pics :D that rear crosmember is chunk nasty how much did that cost you? nice score on the winch you should have got a fuel cell while you where there too if you havent already:icon_confused:

This is insane work of art !! :icon_surprised:

Thanks alot guys

Havent gotten a fuel cell yet. Im gonna wait til the suspension is done before i worry about it. The crossmember was pretty cheap, came rom the local scrap yard at $0.65/lb so id say about $25. :icon_thumby:

yea that is a good idea to wait so you can see what space you are working with. sounds like a good deal 25 dollars for that hunk of metal :icon_thumby:
