New guy here. Looking to buy a 98, got Q's

the autos do have issues. mainly valvebody problems, it will probally flare between a couple of gears

Since when did Ford put the 4R44E behind the 4.0? I have yet to see one behind the 4.0. The combo has always been 4.0/5R55E/8.8.

I'd like some proof if i'm wrong.

From the tech library:
Trans Code Vehicle
5R55E D 1997 - 2009 4.0L Rangers (1997-2001 Explorer w/4.0L)
4R55E T 1995-2001 4.0L Rangers

yeah yeah, numbers aren't my favorite things. its probably the 4R55 which is what I meant to say.

It'd be really nice if it was the 5R55, I've gotten some good laughs out of an idiot room mate and one of those transmissions.

auto trans or manual?
automatic with 140,000+. if you keep good care of the truck, it'll run into the 300,000 mile mark without a hitch. the break-in period for these pushrod V6s is 200,000 miles. the transmission is nearly bulletproof.

even before i just did a tune up today, it ran like it was fresh off the show room floor.

yeah, you're right, the OP is a little mistaken. i've got the 5R55E, it's one strong ass tranny too.

Does this engine have a timing belt or chain? I'm assuming belt.

If I'm not mistaken the only ranger motors that had a belt was the Lima four cylinder motors. All others have chains, except the 2.8 which I think was gear driven.

It's official, i am a new ranger owner!

The one thing he told was, when he switch out the hubs, instead of putting the auto ones in (they were costly) he put in manual hubs.. I'm assuming all I have to do is lock the hubs before I put it into 4wd, correct?
