so i just installed 488s in my 8.8, while doing my gear i had the guidance from a friend that is a licenced mechanic. he told me to use all the old shims from the old pinion and it'll fit perfectly. bull shit! i put it together and i got no backlash. so he takes a look at it and scratches his head. the pattern is not in the middle of the gears but its not far away from it. he tells me that i should get different carrier shims to move the gears away from the pinion to get backlash. is this a load of shit or what, cause using the search feature i cant find anyone using different carrier shims. i need help:sad:

look think about when ever you put new parts in with old parts that need both to work properly, it almost never turns out right. its like puttin in a new battery with corrided terminals.....

Different carrier shims are nearly always needed with new gears (and might be why you didn't find much on it, it's kindof just accepted that the old shims only serve as a starting point for a new set of gears just to get you into the ballpark).

Unless you think you can quickly learn all the very fine details of setting up your own gears and have (or are willing to buy) the special tools needed (get to readin' the links on gear setup in the FAQ at the top here), I would very strongly suggest getting it to a shop that's qualified to do rearend work (a transmission shop may be able to do it, or at minimum they can recommend someone for you to take it to). Hopefully the gears weren't ruined by driving on it for that small amount.

k so i figured out what shims i need and i only drove 30 km at the most. i was really just pissed off that he told me it was ok to drive but what ever, live and learn right. im 18 by the way, not that that is a excuse or anything. thanks for the advice.

Yep, you need help.

Next time, do a little research before you do a project like that. There's a ton of information on how to do it right. Your experience serves as an example of how to do it wrong.

If you can post on this forum, then your Google works. And you can certainly read the tech section on this board. Never hurts to invest a little time before embarking on a project that cost a lot of $ if done wrong.

k so im taking it in tomorrow to get it done. i need my truck and yes i shouldn't have cheaped out on it but i did. and i did research and half understood what i was doing. i bought all new bearings, seals, and races. the only thing i didn't buy was a shim kit, witch i should have bought. i got the front done perfect with all the old shims. if i could go back in time i would but i don't drive a delorean and im no doc brown. (back to the future :icon_hornsup:)

thanks dave,
