New flatbed!

Just finished building my flatbed for my '86 today. If anyone wants plans for it, I can email them to you (AutoCAD file.) They're for a longbox Ranger but it'd be easy to modify them.

Next step is to get it running a little better and get it lifted. Oh yeah, and some different lights for the back...

Anyone have any thoughts about the gas filler hoses in the last pic? I don't want to cut holes in the bed but I think putting gas in is going to be a real problem as the hoses are bent down quite a bit.

Man that is a nice looking flatbed. Simple and funtional. What type of wood did you use for the deck?

Thanks. I used ten 2x6's and one 2x4, cheapest ones I could find at Menards. Once they were stained they look alright.

I think I have a total of around $300 in materials and probably 8 hours of time into it.

I like the natural look of the wood. Just keep up on the sealing of it and it will last for a long time

i know i would make it 2-3 inches wider on each side to maximize use when making a flat bed...eventually tied into sliders it helps protect the cab as well.

I think if I built another one I probably would go a little wider... this one's about an inch shorter than the cab on each side. But for the metal I got I only had one inch of waste so I can't complain.

Next paycheck I gotta get lights and some steel for the rear bumper. I'm planning on adding some kind of wheel wells once I decide what size of tires I'm getting, and maybe some toolboxes under the flatbed frame (kind of like the in-bed boxes on this:

I'm also contemplating a removable metal frame with a canvas top, about the height of the cab.

yeah...lots of options...makes my head spin. i too am doing a flat bed some day cause its just way easy to work out of.

Well not to hi-jack the thread here, but if they can make all that King Ranch crap, and Nissan and Honda can put boxes in their beds... I was lookin' ta do one on my truck, but there ain't no way with the short bed, it'd be a real hack job.

Seems like they could still do those with the newer F-150's. There is an aweful lot of body panel on the outside of those beds.

They're great especially when you've got a single cab...I can fit oil, antifreeze, some rags and a jack and not much else behind the seat so the rest of my stuff has to go somewhere. I had thought about a small toolbox right behind the cab, but I'd lose space to put stuff.
