I have a good 4.6 dohc out of a 93 Merc I would like to marry to my 78 Ranger C6. Can it be done? It gets 25mpg highway and has as much hp as the stock 400. lot less torque, but she's not a work truck anymore.

Not much luck for you on that one. I don't even recall seeing any adapters to use the C6 behind a mod engine recently. If it were a C4 you could have an adapter bellhousing without issue. Try calling Advance Adapter they might have something but I've never seen anything listed.

Without an overdrive transmission I doubt you will be improving much for fuel economy.

I would vote for a 4R70W :icon_thumby:

A small block C-6 wil come close to bolting up to a 4.6, it might be doable, the 400's C-6 ? Not without an adapter. I personally would spend the time and money on the 400, it doesn't take much to wake one up, just a cam, headers and a 4 bbl intake topped with a 650-750 Holley carb.

What was the first year for the 4.6? I believe the first year had a SBF-Windsor belhousing pattern. But they may have been around before '93.

The 400 does have a RV cam, Edelbrock 2171 manifold, and 1406 (600 cfm) Edelbrock carb. It runs very well, I am just looking for some milage, and was hoping to use as much of what I had as possible. If I spend thousands converting, it kinda loses purpose. I do thank you all for your input though. When it comes to computer controled devices, I lose my edge.

That would be an overdrive transmission. (can't believe I left that out of prior post. Must be getting old!)

AFAIK that will limit you to a 4+ speed.

Your car probably has an AODE in it right now, a 4R70W is basically an improved version and is readily available in 4wd versions that would bolt to your stock t-case. I don't know what the wiring differences are between an AODE and 4R70W though.

The M5OD is also pretty common if you want a manual, as is the ZF-5/6 in the 5.4/6.8 in the Super Duty trucks.

You're looking for an E4OD from a 4x4 460 truck. That's the only application that'll bolt right up to your 400. Or a ZF trans from the same 460 V8. The E4OD will require a controller to work the transmission, Holley sells a controller to do this, not sure if it'll work an E4OD though. The ZF might be easier as you're the controller.:icon_thumby:
