Would you sell your old ranger if you had to rebuild your engine?

Put a 2.9 in it!!!

as long as the chassis was in good shape, Id rebuild/repower. I do need to get me a hoist and engine stand. last motor I pulled was with a 3-point hitch boom on a tractor. Ive seen some good deals lately on used hoists/stands, just missed a $20 deal on a engine stand on letgo. The cost of repair/rebuild is going to be way less than another vehicle, but then again like others have mentioned, it would be different if I didnt do my own work and had to pay to get it done.

how are the rust problems in Brazil?
in parts of the U.S. rust is what dooms many vehicles before the mechanicals have time to wear out.

I'm preparing to replace the engine in my 2005, it has 356,000 miles and is due for a "few" parts.

I had the 2.9L V6 replaced in my 88 Bronco 2 with a long block last October. The Bronco 2 is paid for, and already had the transmission rebuilt right after I bought it in 2016 so it only made sense to have the engine replaced, and overall its in pretty good condition, couple of small dents and some paint missing on the rear hatch, but overall in pretty good condition for being 30 years old, and for the way the previous owner neglected it which is why the engine and transmission were replaced/rebuilt due to his complete lack of brains...towed it behind his RV improperly and burned up the transmission and given the oil burning issue it must have been turning the engine over while being towed as it destroyed the piston rings.

No rust on the West Coast.

My brother in law had a bad engine in his ranger (2007 I think) and had it swapped out for another. (Yes it was the 2.9!)

He's really happy with the results and is doing minor restoration work to it since.

If this guy is in Brazil he probably has access to plenty of diesel engines that we have never had in the states, why not grab one from a tractor or volvo car, probably car use the transmission I think Volvo made rwd diesel cars.

Because PetroleumJunkie412 likes the 2.9l engines, seems to be one of the few remaining people on the planet that does
Not a bad engine, but no reason for you to swap one in, he was joking, I hope

Say your vehicle is worth $1,000 as is, bad engine, and say it will cost you $1,500 to fix it, then you have a $2,500 vehicle
So the question is could you go out and buy a replacement vehicle, with rebuilt engine, for $2,500, I am guessing no

Your vehicle may not be "worth" $2,500 after the rebuild, but thats not the point, if you like it and it does what you want then over the next 5 years, or more, it is "worth it"

In Brazil, He might be able to get a diesel from a Ranger.

But the same as swapping in any different engine, cost goes up with "different", lol

Fact it came from a Ranger may help but not much, think of a 3.0l to 4.0l swap, different computer, transmission and wiring PLUS the engine
Just repairing the engine is cheaper, or swapping in same engine as available

Here is the million dollar question, how much does he love this truck? Unless he has some sort of sentimental attachment to this truck then factory fix it or scrap and get something else you always wanted have. It's always going to be cheaper to fix the truck the way it was built (unless you have a 01 mazda 2300 with that fancy 2.3 in, it then your looking at 850 bucks for a engine with 130k on it with no warranty lol) I know I wont make any friends saying this on here but If I could find a Diesel Hilux I would get one of those. Just because they are good trucks as much as I hate Toyota in the American market.
