I am already in need of a new computer for my 86 Bronco II. The exhaust manifolds are pretty bad also. Could I just swap in an 88 computer and disconnect the EGR? Would I also need a new wiring harness?

what`s the problem with the egr and are you sure the computer is bad. Looking at the schematics there are quite a few differences and the computer and harness and possibly the sensors need to be changed. Your best bet would be to fix your existing system without a properly operating egr neither will ever work correct. When you apply vacuum to the egr while the engine is idleing it should stop running. If it dont you need to fix it first off because everything works together on both systems and will never run correct without the egr.

Agreed+1

not to say it is impossible to switch over to the 88' just not as straight forward as you hope

Seems to me AllanD posted a fairly simple conversion procedure here in the past. Give it a good search.

The computer issue is related to the fuel pump not getting a good ground from pin 22. I swapped out the computer from my 87 and the fuel pump worked fine. I was just thinking that as long as I was going to be buying a new computer anyways, would there be an advantage to using the 88 computer and then blocking off the egr? In AllanD's thread, it sounds like he just replaced the computer and blocked off the egr and the vacuum lines.
I was just wondering if there was an advantage in that for my situation?

I have a computer for an 86 Bronco 2 in my shop $20.Went 4.0 the 2.9 motors sold PM me if you want it will get it mailed quickly.

Cleaning up old posts:
Installed the 89 computer and she runs. Since I didn't own it before I identified the computer problem, I don't know what it ran like before.

the reason I went that route in the first place was because maintaining an '86-87 in it's original form with functioning EGR was simply a logistical impossibility.

the factory lines to make the system operate are SO failre prone so as to defy logic and reason.

That and after replacing my 2.9 several times running '86-87 2.9's became a nightmare...
1989-92's not so much...

I'm approaching 3 years with a 4.0 in my truck and really don't even think about 2.9's much...

a 4.0 really is THE upgrade to a 2.9.
