I have a manual trans with a manual 4x4. My neutral position switch harness is cut at the at switch connector, so its impossible to salvage the harness. My questions are the following:

What does it do and do i need it for my truck?
Can I get by without it or do I need to jump the wires?
Would that cause my transfer case not to indicate my shift into 4x4 low? Its manual so when I switch into 4lo the indicator on the dash doesn't light up, only the 4x4 hi. Just wondering if my indicator light bulb needs replacing or the computer requires the switch to be there.

Neutral switch on transmission is not needed if transfer case is manual shift only used for electric shift, and not on most rangers

Clutch switch is needed to start engine

Probably a burnt out bulb
Both 4WD lights in the dash get 12volts with key on
On the manual transfer case, next to linkage, is a 2 wire switch, these wires are the Gounds for the 2 bulbs, one for high one for low
Its a plunger type switch, you can unplug connector and ground both wires, turn on the key and see if both lights are on, if they are on the switch is bad, if not then bulb is

Awesome thanks is for the info I'll try troubleshooting that switch and see what's up.

But I'm also wondering why it's even there to begin with then. Im assuming the previous owner didnt install the Transfer Case themselves, it looks stock to me.

Are you sure it's a neutral switch? Do your reverse lights work?

Yup they do, because I fixed the harness since they were also torn. The switch I'm referring to is located on the passenger side of the transmission.

When I did the 5spd swap on my 94 Explorer limited I rewired that switch to a remote start system. It would only allow the remote start to activate when the trans was in neutral. It was also tied into the cruise control. If you pulled the shifter out of gear, it would shut down the cruise.
Originally it sent ground signal to the red/white wire on the transfer case shift controller to allow the E-shift system to shift into 4 low. I just cut and grounded that wire at the controller and bypassed all the safety features.

Yes, some of the M5OD-R1 transmissions in the early 1990's had the Neutral switch but as far as I know it wasn't used even though wiring was there, 1992/93 were the most common years to have it
It is on the Passenger side of the top cover

My ‘93 4x4 had that switch.
