Needing some help on finding a Transmission for my 1988 Ranger

A friend on mine said this would be the best place to go to to get some help in finding the parts. I have an automatic in my Pickup but if I am forced into it I will convert it into a stick but really don't want to if I don't half to. The truck has the 2.9 V6 in it. I have been looking for about 2 years now for a transmission for it and I'm about to crush it due to this problem I am having trouble with finding the automatic transmission for it. Also the original transmission is non repairable due to the transmission has a crack in it due to overheating from the transmission cooler going out in the radiator. Also I can't afford a remaned one from a parts store because of the price they r asking for it (1,700 dollars). So I am needing some help finding for a good used automatic transmission for it. But if I can't find one I will convert it to a stick. Thanks.

Well I know you said you didn't want to, but a stick conversion might be a lot cheaper. M5OD manual, which should just about bolt into your truck, are out there, dime-a-dozen transmissions. They are good and strong too. since you had the auto it would just be a matter of getting a flywheel, clutch, pedals and hydraulics and bolting it all in. Your drive-shaft should already be the right length, your trans crossmember is in the right spot already.

I swapped an M5 in for my old FM trans and it cost my around 1600, but I had to replace my starter, drive shaft, and a couple other (non trans swap related) items. So there you are already ahead 100 over the remaned.

I've seen a couple guys selling complete atuo to M5 swap kits for $400 in the classifieds section too, so you might want to look in there.

www.car-part.com should have a tranny listed somewhere close to you. Automatics for those are incredibly common, I can't believe you're having a hard time finding a good one.
