I am currently looking to do an engine swap on my 1992 ford ranger xlt 4x4 5 speed. i want to replace the 2.9 with a 4.0. this will be my first swap. and i want to know about how long this would take and what all i would need off the donor vehicle. i want to keep my 5 speed transmission. so any input will be much appreciated. :icon_thumby:

Unless you are lucky enough to have one of the few 2.9L 4x4 M5OD transmissions you will need to replace the trans. It is more than possible to keep your 5-speed, you just have to have the right one so the stronger engine doesn't tear it up. If you have the FM146, which is more likely, the 4.0 will shred the trans in pretty short order.

If you look at the bottom of your trans the good one will have a round bottom, the bad one will be flat. I would start by looking for a wrecked truck that has the options you want and buy the whole thing.
