Alright I was planning on changing my cluster because my temperature gauge was not working..so I went to the scrap yard yanked a cluster off of a 1995 Explorer. I didnt look at the engine to see if it was a 5.0 or not oops. I installed it and well the temperature gauge still doesnt work but now the oil pressure gauge is showing really low like close to the L. I dont know if the reading is correct but im worried. And im not sure how to diagnose to see if my oil pressure is actually low. Also noticed that the acceleration looks a little high also on the gauge reading 1500 rpm at idle. Maybe the cluster needs to go? My ranger has a 4.0 EFI Explorer engine in it. The only problem is I dont know what year the engine is.
 
Maybe there's some type of calibration that's off but worked on the Explorer. Or it's just scrap. Either way, they didn't make a 5.0 Explorer in '95 so that's not the issue.

Did you try replacing the temp sender before replacing the cluster? It could also just be a loose wire, try tracing that wire to see if it's damaged. If that's the case, you might be better off swapping your old cluster back in if you can fix the temp portion instead of calibrating everything that's not working on the new one.

So let me get this straight: You had a non-working gauge on your old cluster but the oil pressure read ok. You go out, buy a used cluster, install it, and now not only is your original problem not fixed, but your oil pressure now reads low. Instead of thinking "what changed?" you go straight to "my oil pressure just disappeared". That about the size of it?


Put your original cluster back, give the wire for the gauge 12V off the battery, and see if the needle goes to the top. If so, go get a new sensor.
