Just bought a 89 ranger custom, its a bit rough but im gonna get her all fixed up and eating mud in no time, need to know what the tranny can take , got the 2.9 in her now, but im going to lift the suspension 4 inches, put 33's on it, so i need to know how big of an engine i can put in her without needing new axles and whatnot, was looking at a magnum 5.2 litre engine from a ram. Is that going to be to much torque for the back end? Let me know guys cuz im new to this. Thanks boys and girls.

Best info is down in the V-8 swap section where they will tell you to really use a 302/5.0L Ford and what all you need to do.

Welcome to TRS.

The Ram 5.2 is going to have odd motor mounts, and youll hafta get the whole ECU and different wiring colors & diagrams anyways. It's probably not gonna be a simple bolt up, and a custom bellhousing adapter thats not readily available from Summit or Jegs will need to be designed. It's really a big headache, from throttle cable to clutch & throwout bearings to engine placement and space. You can't cool that motor with your current radiator, which you will probably have to get an electric fan to compensate for the space. Heater boxes, steering, all the exhaust routing...

Dude, go for a 5.0 or 351 swap at least. Even a 4.6L is challenging.

As far as your axle, it's a 7.5" open rear end with 28 spline axles. You probably have about a 3.73 gear ratio.

If you are asking if that axle will hold up to 200 hp and 420lbs-ft torque, then I don't think you're ready to do an engine swap.

What Pete said.

Street use of 33's will break your front axle. We've seen it here a lot. Off-roading with 33's and your D-28... well it's only a matter of time until you demolish it.

If you want a serious off-road truck, Explorer or F-150 8.8, they will have the stronger 31-spline version. If you really want strength, look for a 9".

For the front, a solid axle is ideal for off-road strength, but the D-35 stands up very well, is fairly widely available, and best yet, it's a direct bolt in.

there are people on here runnin 33's and the 2.9. I'm a big fan of the 4.0 swap. its a direct bolt in, but there is some wiring to go along with it. the tech section is your friend.

you shouldnt have any problem with the 2.9 and 33s. might have to regear alittle. personally, im putting 33s on my 2.3 with regearing later.

at least until i have the materials to do EVERYTHING i want with a 4.0 swap
