BUILDING TRIKE , HAVE 1990 7.5 RANGER REAR 3.08 RATIO I PULLED AXLES
AND SHORTENED AXLE TUBES BUT SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY THE PINION WAS ROTATED.:bawling: AXLES ARE REINSTALLED BUT SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT.:annoyed: HOW DO I GET IT BACK TO RIGHT. :icon_confused:

Need to know what WRONG is before we can help make RIGHT.

What happens if the pinion is rotated with axles removed ?
I read somewhere not to rotate pinion without axles installed, but if you do its no big deal to fix. Thats what happened. Now pinion won't turn at all.

You can turn the pinion all you want with the axle shafts removed. Hell you can do it with the carrier removed.

You are missing a BIG step somewhere, You shorten the axle tubes?
Did ya shorten the shafts too?
Got a inside pic of this thing?

The pinion can turn all day long with no issues shafts or not. If you've got the cover part facing upwards, you can even turn it with the bearing caps off.

Something is binding.

maybe something got jammed in the carrier bearings when the tubes were pressed back in?

I think depending on how the tubes were welded, it could have warped the housing. So when the ring gear came around (if it wasn't on the wrong side already) it would compress against the pinion and bring things to a pretty quick halt. Pressing the tubes in without the housing being properly supported can do it too.

A load of pics would be literally, a thousand words apiece.

Thanks for the replys, the info I had read on dont turn the pinion after axles are removed was either misread by me or faulty info. I went out and pulled axles back out and with both hands grabbed flange and started turning it back and forth intil it finally loosened up. It seens to be fine , must of been a little dried out or some grinding dust some where from working on it. I am going to clean it out real good before cover goes back on. I'll post some pictures of modified rear.:icon_cheers:
