I have a 90 ranger with a 2.3 liter with a 5 speed. All of a sudden my truck won't start. I turn the key and it makes a buzzing sound. Could this be the starter relay instead of the solenoid on the starter?

Do all the lights and stuff light up when you hit the key?

If so it kinda sounds like the starter is tied up. You can try wacking it with a hammer and see if you can get another start or two from it.

But itll need replaced if that gets it crankin

That happens with low voltage...

Ensure you have clean and tight connections. Try jumping the relay on the fender... can be done with a screw driver.

Also try jumping or charging the battery.

Then ensure alternator is working properly.

I am with Gump on this one... not enough juice is getting to the starter. make sure all the connections to the battery are clean and tight, same for the connection to the starter and the relay on the fender. take the cable off to to clean it when you check the connection. Inspect the cables for green oxidation in the wires/ under the insulation, if so, replace.

If that doesn't fix it, have the battery tested at Autozone/ OReilly/ Advanced etc. if it is good, then move to the starter itself. Rusty's advice of giving it a whack may help if it is the starter, and if it does, use your good luck and drive to the parts store of your choice and buy another starter, because the whack method will only work for a little while, maybe only one time.

Thanks to all for the helpful advice. Will be doing something about it on my next day off.

Take a good look at the wires connecting the starter to the battery and the battery cables in general. Corrosion can cause a poor connection problem too.

To follow up on sgt’s advice, wires don’t just corrode on the visible parts, they can corrode inside the insulation. Check for bulges in the wires. Green is baaad…
