So I got a perfectly good 4x4 Ranger that I love to death(the one in my profile)... the only problem is that the 4wd is push button and doesn't like to work when I push the button. Sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't, however, 4 low works everytime. It also takes several tries to disengage the 4wd, I have read the owners manual and know how to engage it, so it is not that. I don't even know where to begin trying to fix it so if anyone has any ideas that would be great. Thanks

ps- I am considering converting it over to manual everything... if anyone has any advice in that area please share the wealth

Thanks, I new to TRS and I found some good info after I posted this, but still if anyone has advice it is still badly needed

+1, swap in a manual. the push button shift is unreliable. even if you get it working properly for now, it will start acting up again soon. i swapped in a manual t-case years ago and havnt missed that push button BS at all.

I like the idea of a manual t-case... Now does anyone know what Rangers or any other vehicles that have a t-case that will swap into mine?

Technically any t-case will bolt up and work, but the Borg-Warner 1354 ('90 and newer 4x4 RBV's) is the easiest (and the best, it has a fixed yoke front output)... Manual 1354's will probbaly be found in Rangers and Explorer Sports (good luck though)... You can find a ton of manual 1350's and I read somewhere you could just put on the fixed output from a 1354... Not so sure though... Someone else may know more...

1.) Easy to put on-1354
2.) Easy to find-1350

If you take the advice given above and dig around in the 4WD forum. There is an announcement at the top that will tell you all you need to know.

I am moving this to the proper place.

the fixed output from a 1354 will not bolt to the slip yoke output of a 1350.

ive been running my slip yoked'd 1350 for 5 years now and havnt had any problems.

Good to know, I read that somewhere and it's just been in my mind it would work... Glad someone cleared it up...

the 1350 and 1354's both came in electric and manual shift versions. any of the 4 options will bolt to any RBV transmission. they all use the same spline count, same bolt pattern, etc.

the front driveshaft is different between the 1350 and 1354. you can put a 1350 in a truck that previously had a 1354 by swapping the original 1350 front driveline in along with the case. the 1350 front driveline will bolt in.....unless you get the driveline out of a truck with a d28 and your trying to put it into a truck with a d35 (or vica versa). there is a 1" difference in driveline length in those cases. d35 to d35 is no problem and d28 to d28 is no problem.

well after all that, I decided to go with the manual 1354 swap... I just bought a manual 1354 and all the linkage, so now is it just bolt in and go? and do I need to swap to manual hubs to make it work or can I temporarily use my auto hubs til I can afford the Jeep Warn Hubs
