I am working on a 1951 MGTD that someone put a Ford V6 engine and automatic in. I do not know the year of the engine.
The inspection plate is missing and I do not know what transmission it has. Can someone lead me in the right direction?

Do you know the displacement of the engine? That, much more than year, is going to be the key factor in finding the correct plate.

try a C5 speed automatic from an 85 'Stang.
look up pan gasket and compare.

I do not know the displacement. any easy way of determining that?
I have attached a picture of the engine.

Looks like you have a C5 or possibly a C4 with the "shallow" pan (just had one of these apart yesterday.)

The inspection cover is something you can get from any V6 Ranger or Bronco II that has an automatic, at least as far as I know. I have two on the bench right now, one for sure came from a C5 and the other is from a 1991 Ranger with an A4LD automatic. They are totally identical, same part number.

Engine looks like a 2.8L. The siamese exhaust ports give it away.

Trans probably is a C5. Any plate from a 2.8 or 2.9 auto will work. A 4.0 would not have the inspection cover because the 4.0 had a full length pan that gets the trans bolted to it.

The "siamesed" exhaust ports as shown are not definitive for identifying it as a 2.8, it could just as easily be a 2.6 engine, as they were quite common..., but it does rule out a 2.9...

But that engine could easily be replaced with a 2.8 or 2.9 or even a 2.9Cosworth, should you find one...

I'm really surprised that you haven't just made your own....even a piece of 1/8" wood paneling in the appropriate shape would keep out crap.
