alright guys my good old 2.3 in my 96 ranger is finally dieing and i have got a 2.5 with less than 10,000 kms out of a 99 and it was too cheap to pass up ($250) it is complete including alt ps fan flywheel harness but no comp so my questions are what is different besides the rods and pistons is it plug and play do i need a different comp i probably need a new clutch too its at 300000 kms so do i use the new 2,3 one i have or do i need one for the 2,5 and i have to use my flywheel as i broke a tooth off of the other one any info is great as i will be doing this this weekend and need all my parts ready as this is my daily driver and i dont have another car

Hardwareman did a swap in his ranger. Look it up in the search. Hes got pictures and all of that good stuff!

Use your 2.3 computer with the 2.5 engine and you'll be fine. I used my 2.3 wiring harness as well. On the 2.5 there are two sensors on the water spout connector where the upper radiator hose connects to. You can either swap in your old spout or just do what I did and only use the rear one because that's the only one the harness will plug into.

You'll definitely need to use your intake manifold with your throttle body as well because the newer 2.5 Ranger's do not have a FPR on the fuel rail like yours does. It's inside the tank. There's also a hose going into the 2.5 block where the temp sensor is on your 2.3. It's just a matter of swapping youe temp sensor into the 2.5 block and you're done there.

I highly recommend installing your tubular header from your 96 in place of the heavy cast iron exhaust manifiold as well.

Everything will bolt up from your engine to the new one including the flywheel. If you need anything just let me know.

thanks for the info guys but i have a problem i cracked the oil pan on the 2.5 **** can i use my 2.3 pan i know the drain plugs are in different places. also does any one know if the intake manifolds are the same because id rather switch my fuel rail and throttle body than the whole thing

Just pull the intake and exhaust manifolds whole from the 2.3 and swap them onto the 2.5, this will get you the correct TB and all the fuel rail parts. While the intake manifold is off be sure to clean out the EGR port before putting everything back on.

The 2.3 pan SHOULD work, I haven't heard anything saying it wont. Pull each off and just check the oil pump pickup, if they are the same then it will be fine, if they are different swap the 2.3 pickup onto the 2.5 along with the 2.3 oil pan. It will actually better to use the 2.3 pan if you can anyway because of the placement of the drain plug with the TTB front suspension. Also be sure and use the good felpro one piece gasket and torque the pan properly so nothing warps and leaks.

thanks guys im just gonna go for it if worst comes to worst i will just jb weld the 2.5 pan will post picks if and when im ever done it better be sunday though

Yes the 2.3 oil pan will work just fine. And I would do like TireIron said and just install the entire intake and exhaust manifolds onto the 2.5

You'll have alot less problems that way. I know for a fact that the fuel rail and throttle body will bolt right up to the 2.5 intake but if I remember right there's a spout for a hose that you cannot use on the 2.5 intake. Other then that they're identical.

I guess if there is an extra hose spout you could always plug it?

ok now the old is out the new is ready but i ran in to all kinds of shit along the way
1. oil pan does fit except for one bolt
2. the pickup tube from the 2.5 wouldnt work in the 2.3 pan but the 2.3 pickup tube is mounted different but with some bending and twisting i got an eighth of an inch clearance under the crank.
3. the bottom end of the 2.5 had alot of rust so i have my fingers crossed.
4.the 2.5 didnt have a crank sensor so went to use my but it broke and so did the one out of my parts truck so looks like mon to order and tues to get.

so i will put the engine in tomorrow and get every thing hooked up and ready so when the sensor comes it better start right up.

does anyone know if the motor will start with no crank sensor???????

good old hurricane ike has screwed me for weather up here near toronto its been pouring for the past 2days and guess what im doing this in my driveway no garage stupid me.

well as for the motor its in but had a problem with one of the fuel lines when i took the motor out but thought it would be ok but the rust that gave me the hard time taking it off has screwed me now the spring inside the quick release wont flip over so now i need that fuel line as well so still have a bunch of stuff off for easy access.

does any one know which line is the return im pretty sure it is the small one but just to be sure i thought id ask.
pictures are coming but it looks like just some before and after as my daughter lost the memory card for the camera.

one other thing i know the oil filter for the 2.3 is different than the 2.5 but the gasket and thread are the same can i use the bigger PH8A instead of the PH3600

I did'nt try that, so I really don't know. I'm using the PH3600.

Sorry you've run into so many problems.

Allen

The only reason they changed the oil filter was because of the engine bay not having room for the PH8, if the PH8 will fit in there without hitting anything on movement (which should be the same as you're 96 originally used the PH8) then go for it with that.

I may have to look into this myself then. Let me know if it works. Thanks

Allen

k well i will try the PH8A should be fine as i used my engine mounts to lower the motor back down to where the 2.3 was still have my fingers crossed though im woried about that rust that was in the bottom end

so the sensor is ordered will be here tomorrow and as for that fuel line lets just say it is obsolite and you cant get it no matter what looks like a bunch of clamps and some hose for me plus when the dealer did have it it was $300

will let everyone know how it goes tomorrow night wish me luck
thanks for all the help

ok the swap is done she started first shot and ticked like a bitch for a while but sounds great after about 20 mins but i do have one problem my rpms are at 2500 and wont go down untill i shut it off then when i start it again its at 800 for a bit then starts bogging down to about 350 like its gonna stall any ideas?????????
