i just bought a 87 ranger 4wd from my uncle for 500 bucks. he told me he thought it needed a new fuel filter put on it becasue after it runs for 20 mins or so it revs up and dies out. so i went ahead and put a new fuel filter on it, gave it a tune up, and i was good on fuel pressure. ( the old filter was dirty, but not bad enough to shut the truck off ) i have between 40-50 pounds of fuel pressure at the rail. the truck seems to run good when i first start it up but after 30 mins or so it revs up and dies. it acts like it was running lean out of fuel then it dies. after this happens i check for spark and fuel pressure again thy are both good. i have good fuel pressure and good spark right at the plugs. but it will not start. after it sits for about an hour it will start up again and repeat the whole process again. im tottaly baffled as to what is going on. i did change the pick up module on the cap but that did not help. it will still quit running after 20 mins. i had my brother run a test on a injector and he said that it was opening. ( he has a tool to test them with ). i was gonna put on a brand new distrib and coil and new brain, but i dont wanna throw away money that i dont need to spend.

this is a winter truck im driving for when we get bad weather, and my mother might use it too and i dont wanna have it break down and leave her stranded.

so if anyboyd has any suggestions to what to do, lookfor, or check, please let me know. you can email or post here or even reach me directly at bigsteveaustin@yahoo.com

thanks

bill

Kinda sounds like a bad ignition module...they are notorious for causing weird stuff like this after they heat up. Something to look at anyway.

WELCOME to TRS

1 i suspect a idle air control mite be sticking
2 leak in the vac. hose that goes from the intake to the firewall (controls idle)
3 module on the dist. that i for some reason cant remember the name of.....

it sounds like you have a electronic component that acts up when it gets hot.

Dang it 86, I am trying to call it an ignition module because that's what the parts stores call them, and now you made me forget what we call it! lol :icon_twisted: Seems like it was TFS or something

TFI module....:icon_thumby:

ignition module

if your talking about the one under the distributer cap, i already tried changing that.. I still get the same result.

They are talking about the one on the Back of the dizzy...

When the truck dies, it may be because that TFI is overheating, take it off and have the parts store test it.

I had simalur problems try changing distibuter as you were planing to do but check your timing as well. mine turned out to be a bad cam and it kept juming timing and eventully the cam failed and caused a follower to fall out and screw up the head because i waited too long to fix it. all i was doing was putting a band-aid over it by changing dist, coil, etc...

That's the pick up coil...

The TFI looks like this: and is bolted to the back of the dizzy.

This seems too high, it should be 30-40. Check your FPR vacuum line for raw fuel. It really sounds like it could possibly be completely flooding out.

After it dies, will it start on starting fluid?

And apparently TFIs can go bad to the point of where it still sparks, just at the wrong time. An autopart store could also be able to test TFI, and there are also test procedures online for TFI-IV diagnostics.

Pulled codes?

i am well aware of what the TFI module is and the fact you need a special thin wall 8mm? deep well socket to remove it.

It's a 7/32" thin walled. You can buy the tool at vatozone for about 5$ :D
