so my 93 exploder had the cats start glowing yesterday, i had midas (i kno bad idea) take a look. they wanted me to do a 780$ tune up. well i replaced the coil pack, plugs and wires and the studdering is better but its still studdering and the cats still get cherry red. i have no power and no fuel enconomy. whats everyones thoughts? cats plugged? im doing a fuel filter tomorrow.

this truck still had the stock plugs and plug wires on and in it:shok:

Why are you changing the fuel filter when you should be replacing your cats?

worn timing gears/chain stretch is my guess. try to adjust your ignition timing

if they are plugged you could just gut them out
No, you can't. Unless you want to risk a $2,500 fine.
Any person other than a manufacturer or dealer who violates section 7522 (a)(3)(A) of this title or any person who violates section 7522 (a)(3)(B) of this title shall be subject to a civil penalty of not more than $2,500.

That's just a civil penalty. It's entirely possible you could also be subject to a criminal inquiry as well. So we don't like people discussing things like that here.

The converter is too hot because there is fuel getting to it and burning in there, I would guess. If it were me, I would scan the codes with my $20 code reader and then individually test anything that came up. I would be looking also at the fuel pressure regulator to see if the diaphragm were ruptured in it.

Hes in Colorado, Your in Indiana. Not all states bust your balls for that stuff. Federal reg or not.

Remember Op Midas is a like a new car dealer. They over charge for everthing. I went for a tune up once and the guy wanted 400 bux it was just for plugs wires fuel filter and the basics. But he wanted extra to change the oil. Do your own maintenance.

If you dont like the idea of gutting the cat, Then go to a U-pull-it and cut on off another vehicle. Shouldn't cost you more than 10-20 bux to get it welded in place of your bad one, assuming its bad. If it dont work at least your didnt spend buncha bucks for a new cat.

As far as your timing chains go? good luck.

Before you start spending lots of money, disconnect the exhaust between the cats and muffler and run the truck. If the cats stop glowing the problem is a collapsed baffle in the muffler. Ive seen this happen a couple of times so it's worth checking.:icon_thumby:

i got smart, went and got a book. found the scan tool hookups, i should find out what the deal is shortly. the cats arent glowing red.

my studder was from idle to 4K, now its from idle to 2K with the new plugs and wires.

my code scanner is giveing me code 111. my haynes book says code 111 is pass? can anyone shed some light on this code for me?

once again, check your ignition timing

so i drove out to my buddys, got a CEL on the way. got to his house and scaned it. i got code 172 (heated oxygen sensor indicates a lean condition on the right side)
