I have 98 ranger extended cab, 4x4, V6 4.0L, Manual shift. about 130,000 miles

The issue i am having is when i start the truck in the morning to warm up and defrost, i am having an issue with it staying running. What i do is start the truck (starts right up), put it in nuetral and take my foot off the clutch and put the parking break on, it may run for a few seconds then it stops running. It just started doing this and i am sure it is tempurature related, being only 10 degree F outside. Can someone point me in the right direction as to what to check?

Thanks

I got the truck fixed by getting a NEW IAC valve. Cleaning the old one did not work!

Does it die, or shudder and sputter out? What are the RPM's when when you first start the truck? My dads truck did this and the IAC valve wasn't kicking up the idle when it was stone cold. If this is the case, you should be able to remedy the problem by lightly stepping on the gas , keeping it at or a little above 1500 RPM.

It kind of just dies out. I have not noticed the RPM, but everything seems normal until you take your foot off the clutch and then it just seems to stop running.

Okay just an update, I did clean the IAC valve, but did not help. Also I started the truck and left the clutch disengaged and it still dies out. When i start the truck it goes up to 1500 rpm and then slowly dies down. If i give it a little gas it will stay running but once i let off the gas it stays running for a few then dies out again. Any other ideas?

I put a code reader on it and no codes came back either! Also when you start the truck the RPM will go up and down from 2000 rpm down to 100 rpm and back up then stall.

Add some of the fuel drier to the tank, and check all the emission systems that are not affected by open loop. Also a good can of fuel injector cleaner or seafoam will do ya good.

I would also check your temp sending unit. If its not registering the engine as cold then most likely its not staying in open loop til warmup. just a thought

::EDIT:: after another thought, it might be the other way around if the temp sending unit is bad it stays in open loop. hell check it either way.

I installed a new temp coolant sensor and did not help, still have the same issue.

What about the rest of the stuff? What have you tried since posting, and what have you not?

I installed a new mass flow air sensor, added some fuel injector cleaner and cleaned the IAC valve as well as well as the temp coolant sensor. I also cleaned the Idle throttle body before this started to happen.

Sometimes a "cleaned" IAC can be just as bad or worse than a dirty one. When you clean them you can knock crap lose that causes other issues.

Yea i got a new IAC valve and it seemed to work! Truck is in perfect running condition now, should have just replaced the IAC valve in the first place!
