I bought a 98 3.0L with a blown head gasket. I pulled the engine and replaced it with a 93 Aerostar engine. I only used the block and heads from the Aerostar everything else was kept. Went to start it up tonight and it fires right up then spits and sputters and dies. If I feather the gas pedal I can get it to spit and sputter longer but it eventually dies. My guess is I've got the timing all jacked up. Because the CPS was moved from the Ranger engine to the Distributor Aerostar engine I really couldnt mark it. So I put the #1 cylinder at TDC by aligning the line next to TDC with the spot on the timing cover that has a line. (Just to the right of the crank sensor there is a raised spot with a line) I put the little flag under the CPS in the center of the window. Is this right or do i need to get the actual tool?
Second thing that bothers me is that when i turn the key to the on position I dont see a CEL. So either I'm looking in the wrong spot or it dont work, or something else is amiss. Thanks RB
