about to put in the new head gaskets on my 92 and had to buy new silicone adhesive the instuctions on the back say after put together hand tighten bolts until adhesive begins to squeeze out and then wait an hour and turn bolts a half turn???????? not sure what to do considering the headbolts have to tighten wait 5 minutes and tighten again. also could somebody give me the diagram for the bolt sequence and tourque specs? im trying to get these gaskets done within the next hour!

i always coat the threads liberally with rtv, torque the bolts as specified, and wait as long as possible before adding coolant.

if I can wait overnight, I do. but sometimes you don't have that kind of time.

thank you!!! I found the tourque specs and sequence in the tech articles. thanks for the quick response!

What engine is this?
1992.........

Can't be a 2.3 because I've never seen a call for adhesives on the head gasket...

I do miss the user profile section where we can give the year/engine/and drive overview...

I think we should have a sticky saying to please state your engine and other specs in the post...it might save a bit of time on responding to anything time sensitive...but I do love a good mystery...:)

btw, i read this thinking he meant coating the threads of the head bolts that pass into water-jackets.

most engines do not call for any sealant on the head gasket

This. I was surprised that the 4.0 Heep engine has bolts passing into the coolant channel. Seems like something you would want to avoid when designing a casting.

They sell bolt sealer specifically for this, although I don't see why silicone wouldn't work either.

I just look in the profiles, "About Me" and usually listed .Yours:

in the dozens, and dozens...and dozens of engines that I have done, spanning most manufacturers, and displacements.

it's not just the jeep 4.0,
more often than not, there are head bolts that are not blind, that go into water-jackets.

silicone works, as do many appropriate thread sealants. the only way the silicone would make it into the coolant, is if you put far too much on, and/or filled it with coolant too soon (before it set up), and the coolant "washed" some of the RTV off. but this would be the case with other thread-specific sealants too. which are usually anaerobic, and never "dry" and love to clog stuff up.
