i have the motor in and every thing even test started out of the truck its ready to run so i go to crank it and the flywheel is like making a really loud noise and it only does this in one section of me turning the motor over my father had this motor before me and he had this same problem so i shimed the starter and it seemed to fix it-on other hand i took this shim out and it still does this??? any suggustions b4 i pull this thing thanks matt

sounds like a frgged teeth or cracked flexplate

i put the newer style starter on it because i needed clearance for my headers but it works fine i checked the parts #s at work and the starter lines up correctly but looks like im gonna have to pull it thanks man

make sure you have the right starter. is it a mark 7 starter?

manual or auto are different

no its a ford f-150 302 year- 96 part number thru advance auto as i know it would be a p3205s auto tranny

i think tha is the same as a mk 7

likely a flywheel injury then...pisser

I run the newer style starter on my 302/C-6 set-up and have no issues like your describing. I don't run any shims, but if it fixes yours use it. I would check the condition of the teeth on your flexplate. Just remove the inspection plate and check the teeth all the way around it.

Dumb question but do you have the flywheel put on backwards? Maybe it needs to be flipped front to back.

usually it wont let you, but that can lead to cracks

I know, but they normally have the teeth offset from the center and maybe it needs to be set the other way. Just a thought. Either that or maybe there's a problem with the starter not disengaging completely or the snout is just too long.

thanks for all of your replies and lol no the flywheel wasnt on backwards it was warped and i currently have the new one installed and operates well without my duraspark module hooked up and as soon as i hook it up for it to fire the engine drags when i try to crank it any suggestions

You mean like the started dragging? If so your bendix spring may not be retracting the gear back into the housing. My last motor liked to eat starter housings

Ive been waiting for someone with some information to maybe help me or atleast guide me i have a new flexplate and i have the 96f-150 mini starter you think i might need it shimed or what ?;it makes a grinding noise upon starting only when the engine has fire but when i unplug the module and turn it over no problems HELP Thanks matt

everyone i fixed this issue it was two knocts out of time the reason i didnt catch this is because the vaccum advance was hitting the intake manifold so it wouldnt let me turn the distrib so i rotated the wires twice and it started
