Now I really need help.
I replaced the starter the cable running from the solenoid to the starter.
Battery is good. Wires have solid connections with no corrosion.
When I turn the ignition, I can hear everything I am supposed to hear, except the fire.
With the hood up, I can see the radiator fan trying to turn, and the RPMs jump from 0 to about 500.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jesse.

you only need 3 things for any engine to run. Spark, compression, and fuel.

figure out which one is missing, and than we may be able to help you narrow down why its missing,.

got to be a little more descriptive of what is going on. Do you have fuel, do you have spark, is the engine cranking over. Help us out alittle

When I turn the key it just clicks. I can hear the fuel pump come on. I can hear the solenoid engage. I can hear the starter try to turn. With the hood open, I can see the fan move a little. The RPM gauge jumps from 0 up to 500 when I turn the ignition. I replaced the starter and the cable going from the solenoid to the starter. The engine is not turning over.
I am going out now to pull the starter and see if the fly wheel moves.

Fly wheel won't budge.....

Anyone wanna 88 Ranger?

Hey, so just to clarify, you bought a new starter, installed it, and when you turn the key its still just "clicking"? or can you hear the motor acctually turning over?

if its just "clicking" i would use a volt meter and go from the positive battery terminal to the starter solenoid and see the volts that passes through, if the volts are good then go from the starter solenoid down to the starter and check the volts. could be corrosion in the cables or the solenoid could be gone.

First of all check your basics the battery ok if that is ok if you can get a volt metter check to see you have 12 volts on the big cable the comes from the battery. Then go to the little wire and check for voltage you should only see voltage when your cranking and there shoud be 10.5 to 12 volts. If all that check out ok make sure you have a good ground to the starder it grounds on the block were it bolts up to make sure its clean. If all this is ok make sure they didnt sell you a bad starder. Get a jumper wire and touch the big cable the midem cable with the key on make sure its in park it should crank if not let me know how it went and let me know more

Sorry it's been a while. I had to take a week off work to get a vehicle. I haven't had a chance to look at the Ranger in a while, but I have a few days off coming up and will look at it again.
I have checked the battery - tested OK. I tried jumpering the solenoid - did exactly what it was supposed to do. In every case of trying to start it, the engine has not turned over.
I will get back with results.
Thanks.

that clicking sound is commonly attributed to a blown starter, you sure you installed it right?
