i have a 88 ranger 2.9 and to day i was out and my motot [lifters] were ticking no biggy it does that some times. well it got way bad and my oil pressure was at 10psi, that would be the oil pump going out right.

yep, time to pull the motor and do the pump before u wipe out any bearings

May be the oil pickup tube blocked up from debris, i dont know if the 2.9 used fiber timing gears or not but the 2.8's did and the stuff from timing gears would plug up the pickup tube, either way pan needs to come off.

There's almost no chance it's the oil pump.

If the pressure is truly only 10PSI, it's probably bearing wear.

however, bearing wear would not happen as quickly as this had, it was fine before with the truck, but on the trip it dropped, that points to a oil pump related issue

anybody think to ask him if he checked his oil level:dntknw: or whether or not his truck had issues with using oil. lifter tick can sometimes indicate not enough oil in crankcase:blush::icon_idea:

just from the type of guy he is i think hed keep a eye on his oil level, besides, anyone that drives a 2.9 and doesnt keep a eye on the oil level doesnt deserve a ranger;missingteeth;

Well, mine did the same thing, one day it was fine, the next day it bottomed out. When I start it, it comes up to pressure, holds it for 5-15 minutes the drops to the bottom. When I'm under the truck while it's running, I can her a clicking noise from inside the pan where the oil pump is...pretty sure it's a broken or stripped pump shaft, I'll let you know when I pull it.

get a mechnical gauge on it the factory "sending units" are not that reliable.

the other thing is that the oil filter cold have pluged/ stopped working as it should.

change the oil and filter and with (even if it is temporary) mechnical oil pressure guage and see if oil pressure comes back . it could save you the expence/ trouble of tearing into the engine. if it doesn't well then you know what you're in for and all your out is oil and filter. Unless you are just itching to do alot of wrenching on the engine...have at it.

i have a new auto meeter oil guage not even a month old. and yes i check my oil .im not stupid. ya im hopein its not the bearings. changed my oil 2 weeks ago. i take VEREY GOOD CARE OF MY RIG.

Hey that's great, you take care of your things and you already covered the asspect of iffy factory sending units...don't think anybody was calling you stupid. sorry if you got that impression.

sometimes oil filters fail....purhapes you just got a bad one. no ones fault, it happens.

What were you running for oil pressure before and after the oil change/service??...where did it normally run??

any chance that the little line that transferrs oil to the guage got a hole in it??

got to agree, that oil pressure doesn't ussually just stop without some clues long the way.

In anycase if oil filter and oil line are good....then you are looking at some serious wrenching.

sorry just have had a bad day, i chacked the lil oil line for the guage and its all good. that was my first thought. it was running at 42psi and 10psi at idle. it never once has been under that since i put it in. ya it just started tickin realt bad, all the lifters were chatering. not one or to. then i was running at 20psi, 5 mins latter it was down to 10psi to 8psi. i wonder if the screen on the pump is gumed up.

sorry guys thanks alot for your in put to. i guess if it is the bearings im just going to rebuild the motor.

I'd sure pull the pan and check the oil pump first before I spent a bunch on rebuilding. Bearings don't wear out overnight, and as inaccurate as the stock oil guage may be, if it was bearing wear, you would have seen the guage gradually just not getting as much pressure as it was before. Could possibly be build up on the sump screen, could very easily be a broken or stripped pump shaft, wouldn't be the first one that did that...
