Heres the deal I just swapped out motors. My 91 ranger had a 4.0L but the heads were screwed so, I got a motor out of a 91 explorer. The explorer run great I drove it into the shop to pull the motor out! I got the motor in my truck hooked up all the wires & lines. Changed the oil filled the coolent & fired it up. It started on the first try & started smoking white, I figered it was just old coolent in the exhaust & the tick sounds like the injectors. I drove it around the block a bunch and it wont stop with the smoke. I hope it not head gasket again I will snap.

how much white smoke
and whats your truck, standard or auto, and whats the explorer?

There is lots of white smoke when you hammer it down. The explorer was a auto and my truck is standard. I think its the lower intake gasket.

no, stop at autozone. they'll do it for free. The computers might have something to do with it. i'm not sure. See if you can grab the computer from the explorer. Hook it up and see what it does. Where there any wires going to the auto tranny from the motor? to Any sensors or anything? If so, you might want to jump them.

If you've got white puffin out the ass end...you're burning coolant plain and simple. I think it is the lower intake gasgket that usually shows this symptom. Unless you've got collant in your oil too...then it could be a head or head gasket.

Normally that is a sign of a bad head gasket, although the intake could do the same. Have it pressure tested, or if your feeling mechanically inclined, rip it apart, and replace all the gaskets from the head gaskets out. Since you plan on keeping this motor for a while, which I only assume that you do, and since its giving you problems right off the bat, you might as well do it and then you wont have to worry for probably many years to come, IF you do it correctly.

I checked into it, there was no back pressure in the rad. So I pulled it apart and it looks like the lower intake gasket! I'm going to change it out and hope like hell it fixes all my problems. I'll find out tomorrow.
