I am hoping to get some advice on a v-8 engine swap. I have a 1992 Ranger 4x4 supercab with a 2.9 engine with a Mitsubishi Transmission FM146 D 12 bolts on the pan and a rear axle 86 3.73 gears 10 bolts on it. Would a V-8 engine swap work with these if I drove it normal with no off road or racing?
I would like to put a 302 crate engine from e-bay in the truck, what engine adapters, radiator, electronics would I need for this swap? I have the Ranger v-8 Conversion book and have read it several times but am still unsure what to buy. Thanks if anyone can take the time to help this Retired Coastie I just do not want to spend money on the wrong items for this up coming swap I want to get it right the first time

Do a search for V8 swaps, it'll take you over a week to read through all the different swaps that were done...Trans will not work, rear axle would under normal driving

^What he said....
A lot of info and people to help if you do a little reading first and then ask .
A few to start with....and these are two you have to ask yourself, answer these two and you can start your plan of attack (and you will need a plan).
Carb or EFI?
Manual or Auto Trans?

your best bet is to get a 5.0 ho from a early 90's mustang,as noted above the trans and t-case will not work.the easiest auto to ues is a C6,but it lacks an overdrive.an E4OD will need a compatible computer.the best bet for a transfer case is a 205,as they are short enough to fit between the frame rails, which most later V8 t cases won't.the rear and front diffs should be ok for most use.

:icon_confused: Why do people continue to give this advice ? :dunno: These motors are no better candidates for a swap than many other applications are. Especially for a Ranger swap.

Actually they are, primarily cause the dual sump pan is already on these year/model motors...

i like to use these motors because they are easy to find, usually pretty cheap(lots of kids wrappig their mustangs around poles)and even the mounts will work with the ranger crossmember.i've used other motors as well, but for someone doing their first swap the combination of price, availability, and suitability-not to mention info and a strong aftermarket support generally make it the best choice.

The Crown Vic/Towncar/Marquis motor has the same pan too. As does the 5.0's in the 88-93 T-Bird/Cougar (which has a shorter FEAD) Ditto for any other 5.0 from an 80-91 Ford/Lincoln/Merc car.

Price? people usually want more for a Stang motor. Availablity ? No. The 5.0's from other applications are far more numerous (pickups, vans, Vic's,etc) Aftermarket support? No. Same parts fit all 5.0's. Best donor is a 88-93 T-bird/Cougar, 96-2001 Explorer/Mountaineer or a 94-95 Stang.

Agreed, but again, only a few select Lincoln's had the High Output version of the 5.0L, the rest except the mustang had Standard Output versions. All mustangs have the High Output as standard...

ever try to put a 5.0 from a pickup or van into a ranger?you need to cut a pretty big hole in the hood to clear the intake.

UMMM, NO....................you do not. There's been several done with room to spare under the hood.
