I have a 87 bronco 2 with a 2.9 V6 5 speed, the starts right up but after driving for awhile its hard to start when you shut it off,i noticed the positive batter cable gets hot and so does the solenoid switch,if you let it sit for 20 minutes it will start right back up ive already put a solenoid switch on it,ive also heard that if the inside fender isnt clean the solenoid switch wont make a good ground

ANY IDEAS

"Hard to start" as in the starter cranks slow? And if you let it cool down, it is all back to normal?

theirs times when it does crank slow and starts then theirs times when it starts up fine, the problem is after i drive it for a bit and park it and try to start it again all it does it turn over like the battery is dead but once it sat for a good chunk of time it will fire right back up,thats when the solenoid switch is hot, once its cooled down its fine

When the cables get hot... is that due to trying to crank it?

Here's the problem though. You are testing it when it is cool. When a starter gets older, it gets sensitive to heat. When they become that way, they don't crank easily and it heats up your cable and solenoid.

That said, it could still be your wire or a connection. My money is on your starter though.

what about wraping it with heat tape or header wrap i just need it to start when i take it in to smog it lol after that its out of my hands im getting rid of it,is their no way to bandage it or a temp fix

when i got it the old solenoid was on its last leg so i put a new one in and i had no problems for 4 days but do you think that would work

Check all of your wiring around the solenoid, battery cables, etc for bare spots hitting metal. I went through 4 starter solenoids and 2 starters before finding the problem was a couple of wires had some insulation missing and was shorting out causing the starter solenoids to eventually fail which would burn up the starter in the process as it would continually crank until you disconnected the battery cable. If your battery cables are not securely fastened to the battery you will get a lot of heat build up as the current tries to pass through the lose connection. Your battery cables may be corroded internally under the insulation somewhere as well causing your starting problems. If your battery cables are old you may want to look into getting new ones, then replace your starter solenoid and the starter all at the same time which should alleviate your symptoms completely.
