get a test light, test for power to the solenoid control wire when the problem occurs.

if it lights consistently when you turn the key and the engine doesn't crank then it has to be the solenoid, how clean is the ground that it mounts to?

The solenoid ground is clean, but I will double check tomorrow. Which wire is the solenoid control wire? The small one or one of the larger one's?

Possibly the power wire going to the starter from the solenoid.

One other thing...could it be the ignition that the key goes into?

it could be the ignition switch, which is what you'll be testing for when you hook that test light up to the only small wire that plugs into the solenoid
