need help 01 ranger edge 4.0

99rangeroff road has a very good point, i usually do a quick inspection on my fuel system every oil change since im already under there, but never overlook the simple problems

I too have an 01 4.0 sohc edge 4x4 with 4.10 gears, takes me about 15 mins to get to work. I bought an utraguage /www.ultra-gauge.com/ultragauge/index.htm I LOVE it,It shows me that I run rich till I get up to temp .It shows that with cruise on or a steady pedal I can get 23/25 mpg on the hiway ,but with combo driving I am averaging 15.5.

Bartkowski please if were having the same issues then by all means hijack this thread and we can find some answers out lol I didn't see the picture you posted but I will look around and see if I can find something on it.

99 ranger I just replaced the filler tube no gas leaks that I have found and vacuum pressure from nano fold is good. I checked fuel pressure its holding steady at 63 psi key on engine off and not dropping so its not a fuel delivery issue.

Fuel pressure at the test valve of 63 psi seems way too high. My 94 ranger with 4.0 engine tests at about 32 psi with key on engine off, and holds at 30 running. The 94 ford service manual says 30 psi running is fine. If you have that much pressure, I would be suspicious that your fuel pressure regulator is not functioning. It should open and allow fuel to go back to the gas tank if pressure builds up more than say 38 pounds. One quick and easy test of the fuel pressure regulator is to pull the vacuum hose off the fitting on the bottom of the pressure regulator soon after it has been running. There should be no gas coming out of that fitting or gas in the vacuum hose. Maybe the regulator diaphragm is ruptured and gas is being sucked into the vacuum line and burned by the engine. I am assuming the 99 engine is the same as my 94.

I'm gonna start drivin my scooter to school and gym. My trucks swallowing gas too. I got 208k miles though and I know I got a tiny fuel leak cause of my fuel filter which I have neglected to change cause fuel lines all messed up. It could be a small leak, you never notice gas or fluids on ground? Maybe it's small enough to dissipate on frame before even dripping down? Idk just ideas as that's why I get 10-12 mpg so my leak ain't that bad... Im just hoping if I can get a 5.0 I stay around 12 mpg lol.... I'm gonna be driving a scooter to the gym jacked on roids haha wouldn't that be funny.

@ bhawk the repair manual says 63 psi on the fuel pressure is good and as for pressure regulator checking idk if your idea would work seeing as mine is in the tank lol I have the in tank assembly with press reg fuel pump sendingvunit and fuel tank float.

@ bilzy7 no fuel leaks I believe it to be a ecm issue someone said they unhook the battery and get excellent gas mileage for maybe 45 miles I read up on that and what that does is it rests your computer memory so it is reprogramming the fuel trim. So that leads me to believe either o2 sensors have gone out and computer is adapting to them thus no trouble codes or my ecm is taking a dump I've replaced cts. Tps, and put different plugs and wires than i had 2 weeks ago. We will see going out to test o2 sensors today let you all know what goin on

Sorry didst mean to confuse anyone I don't have a 99 ranger I have a 2001 ranger lol 99 ranger is another member

i will hive you all a run-down on my truck I bought it from an older guy who was losing his job elbowed 3500 left on it I gave him 4k for it he has takin excellent care of it he has every minor and major tune up documented with receipts every oil change. brakes tires and any other work including exhaust and cat replacement he said methinks they replaced the o2 sensors but he wasn't sure looked at the receipt and they didn't so at 150k miles they might be going out especially when the manual say to change them every 60k lol so I'm gonna start there today and see if I can find some readings on them thanks all for the help I really appreciate it. BTW this is an adaptive computer it will learn to compensate for things like bad o2 sensors and adjust and it won't always throw a trouble code I'm finding out lol

@ big Jim unplugging the battery resets the ecm for fuel trim and transmission shift memory I read that in (of all places) my owners manual under the maintenance section it will tell you to unplug plug it back in and let it idle til it gets to operating temp then turn on your ac let it idle for a minute then drive around that's why he is getting 16-18 mpg for a 1/4 tank before it goes back to 8-10mpg it also erases the transmission settings so your trans will shift really firm for a few miles until it relarns its programming

Sorry for all the typos I'm using a dumb phone lol

have you guys checked the temp sensor to the computer,, i have been reading in several different posts here that a faulty temp sensor will cause crappy fuel milege as well as hard warm starts ect

Whatever the problem was went away for awhile now I'm having the same issue but worse now it lacks power and fuel economy. The weird part is I'm at 4800 ft above sea level, my dad had the truck in san Jose, ca which is close to sea level and it got excellent city mpg have it back up here and its getting garbage mpg again changed out maf sensor and o2's reset computer and its still getting bad gas mileage NO CODES. Any help would be very much appreciated.

It's been like this for 2 months i was getting 15-17 in town some route same way of driving and now 8-10 mpg sea level the truck gets 16-17 city but where I'm at 4800 its getting garbage can't figure it out
