My 88 ranger with the 2.3 lost all clutch pressure...assuming slave cylinder.

I have a parts truck...its a 92 4.0. the part #'s are different but will this slave work on my 2.3?

I would say no if you have both off why not look at them both and compare.

cause its cold as hell lol and working outside

If they're both M5OD trannys you should be able to just swap in the other tranny...probably the hardest part is to get the Quick-Disconnect to disconnect quickly though...

Did you check the clutch reservoir and try topping it up...also check that the lower connector is still connected to the reservoir...and that there are no cuts in the hose...that hose if pretty tough, but a piece of flying metal can slice through them pretty good...

EDIT: Oops...didn't see the 4.0 part...so...you're right Tee Rev...they won't swap...but if the slave part numbers are the same that would work

The different bell housing bolt patterns of the 2.3l & 4.0l won't allow this.

But the slave cylinder part # is the same for either transmission, so you could swap it if need be.

The easiest way for you is to look at the 4.0l trans & then compare it to the 2.3l trans. If they look the same, the 2.3l has an M5OD. If it looks different, then you don't.

If the reservoir is empty I'd be looking for the leak before diving into anything. Pull the rubber inspection cover off the bell housing & see if there's a lot of brake fluid sitting in there. If so you're slave is leaking, if not take a look at the line for breaks, then of course the master cylinder. The fluid had to go somewhere & there should be tell tale signs as to where.

yes comparing the tranny's sounds easy. but the 4.0 one is buried in snow. I dont want to crawl under it unless its to get the slave

OK then.

While your under the 2.3L looking for leaks, take a look at the transmission to see if it's one piece including the bell housing, if it is then it's an M5OD, If it has a separate bell housing it isn't, or if it has a pan it isn't.

okay so no visible leaks and oddly enough pulling the rubber piece off the tranny I didn't really see any leaks inside there either.

but yes it is a M5OD hopefully thats a good thing I'm not sure.

lol the slave is internal that could be quite an issue that means i have to pull the tranny doesnt it?

what should I do lol I need my truck.

Yes you need to pull the tranny, unless you can fit your arm up in there and do it with just the tranny slid back.

Resovoir empty??

Fill her up and bleed it, maybe she is still good. :icon_thumby:

I just remembered...on my first truck, the metal arm that goes into the Master came out once and was just hanging there...it worked OK after I put it back into the sleeve, but it's something that might also cause you to not have any clutch pressure...the pedal just sorta dangles there and doesn't return properly...

Other than that...defiinitely try bleeding the clutch...that worked for me after I found out that the lower connector was leaking fluid...and that was caused by me not putting the right retainer in to hold the line in place...

If you can get someone to pump the pedal while you look for leaks it will help...some leaks you won't see until it is pressurized by the pedal...

just buy a new slave cylinder, or you'll be kicking yourself in the ass when you have to pull the tranny again in 3 months.

in 3 months my 2.3turbo swap should be in the works so I dont care. I just want it to last a while.

just made an attempt at bleeding and I can't get anything out. minus a gurgling sound and a few drips.

tried it the way the haynes manual said. press the pedal, hold. open bleeder. wait. close bleeder. release pedal.

did that a million times and got a few drips.

so lost.
