I have a rear axle from a 2010 Ranger 2wd. It's the big bearing but only 28 splines. Plans are to install 31 spline shafts and locking diff of some sort.
The problem is the width, measuring from the outside of the axle flanges is only 57.5" The center of the disks are quite thick, a bit over 1/4". I think Ford narrowed the axle to keep the wheels in about the same place.
The shafts are 26-15/16 and 29-13/16, again measured from the outside of the flange to the tip past the C clips. These are very close to some regular 28 spline shafts, but each about 5/8" shorter than Explorer shafts, 27.62" & 30.5" (per listings)
I can live with the longer shafts by making brake plate spacers, but I'm concerned about the bearing surface being too far out to contact the rollers.
questions:
are the Ranger Level II 31 spline axles the same width as an Explorer?
I could not find any listings for them.
does anybody have a set of used Explorer 31 spline axles so we can measure the distance between where the bearing rides and the Cclip end?
If anybody is within a couple hours of Toledo I could haul the parts to you for a comparison, I'm retired and have lots of time for adventures. Just point me to a good pizza or barbecue place when I get there.
Thanks
Perry
