Truck's a 95 Ranger with 4.6. Computer is a 99Mustang GT. Tranny is a 03 T-56. Problem is NO Speed. I was thinking of swapping in a cluster from an 99-00 Explorer 5.0. This would give me a v8 tach and a speedo that is compatable with my computer. Am I off track here? Do the 95 Ranger and the 99 Explorer really have different type speedos? It is possible I have a wiring problem. I know the guy who did the wiring and he's a dofus.

The ECM controls the speedo, accepts the input from the VSS and outputs to the speedo...I believe the new ECM you are using is not talking to the VSS and/or the speedo...you will need both EVTM's and will have to do some tracing to figure it out...

That is true for 2001+ Rangers but not earlier. A stock 95~97 Ranger/Explorer has a gear-driven signal generator on the transmission or transfer case that sends its VSS output directly to the speedo, cruise control, GEM and PCM in parallel. When the engine and trans got swapped out, the original Ranger signal generator was lost.

If there is no compatible signal generator on the swapped transmission, he'll have to set up another source for the VSS and a module to correct it to a 0~12v square wave of the correct 8000 pulse/mile frequency required by the speedometer. The easiest way would probably be to use an aftermarket correction box reading the ABS sensor on the rear axle. [I used a Ford GEM module to correct my VSS from the rear axle ABS sensor and it works perfectly. On the downside, a new GEM module is more expensive than an aftermarket module and it needs a dealer tool to calibrate it for tire diameter.]

Speed Changer II correction module

The tachometer is whole other story. 95 Rangers have a unique cluster and dash harness that is set up differently from earlier and later years. Those differences makes it problematic to swap in later Ranger/Explorer clusters even though they appear virtually identical. Some of the indicators and gauges will read incorrectly. I'm sure it can be done but would require some research with the EVTMs.

I stand corrected, thanks rwenzing:icon_thumby:
