my truck has the fm-146. i had problems downshifting when i bought the truck. i swapped in a 2.3 td engine and put in a new clutch, slave and pressure line. I did'nt change the master.

Now i have the same issue. i have to double clutch every downshifts in every gear. But it shifts fine upward.

I wonder if my clutch is bled right/if the master is letting air in? or, if all the synchros are toasted, all gears?

is downshifting needs more clutch movement then up shifting?

The need for double clutching is usually due to wear on the synchro rings more than anything. As far as downshifting needing more movement, it shouldnt matter. But if the clutch doesn't let go properly it would be harder to downshift because the engine would need to speed up to match the gear speeds, but it is slowing down since you are off the throttle.

Since this is all gears, I say it is probably a hydraulic issue.

I would bleed the master just to be sure.
Because of the angle of the master it is almost impossible to bleed it the regular way, and if the reservoir ever goes dry air gets trap in the master.

Make sure clutch reservoir is full

Inside on the clutch pedal push rod, there is a safety switch, remove it, spin it around and slide up the insert, switch will then come off the push rod.

Disconnect the push rod from the top of the clutch pedal.

C-clip pliers should be used for the master, and have a towel under the master, fluid will come out, that is the point of doing this.

A c-clip holds the master piston in the cylinder, remove it
Pull up slowly on the push rod, piston will come with it, when fluid starts to come out the air is gone, push piston back down and re-install c-clip.

Reassemble.
Engine will not crank unless safety switch is installed.

There is a good video of how to do this

yeah, oil is new. the master is leaking a tiny bit (oily where the push rod goes). i'm waiting for parts.

Hook it up under the truck and bleed it upside down with the reservoir line stuck in a bottle of brake fluid BEFORE installing the new master on the truck.

Trust me, it makes life a lot easier.

I'll do that, thanks.:icon_thumby: You're right, it was a real pita to bleed. How does the plastic line reacts when you put it back in? Still unsure if it is the master (only part i reused, and i had it in my hands... does'nt pay to cut corners...)

I have never really reused the line. I usually have to cut them to get the slave out.

well, it was the master cylinder that was bad. adms8, i could reuse the line, then i just bled the whole thing attached to the slave and reservoir, using a small screwdriver to push on the master piston, moving the master from times to times in a downward position to an upward position and repeat. until i just could'nt push on the master cylinder piston cause it was too hard. i bled at the slave too.
