Need a new tranny......

I need to find a used tranny for my 98ranger 4x4 4.0. I was wondering if anyone knew when they used my tranny in these trucks? This would be very helpfull when I call around to the salvage yards or search at the pick and pulls. Also I remember seeing a manual transfer case in a truck at a dealership. Wouls I just need the linkage to convert my on the fly case or is it a whole different T-c?

any input would be greatly appreciated!

That might have been helpful......I need a manual. I found the tech article on the transmissions. Are the 2wd and 4wd transmissions the same minus the transfer case? Also would I be able to use a M50D-R1HD from the 2000 and up rangers?

2wd and 4wd are NOT the same. The trans must also be from a 4.0 truck. I don't think it matters what year you get, as long as those 2 criteria are met.
