Me and my dad are buying a 94 explorer 4.0 with a blown engine. What 4.0's are a direct swap into the 94 with no electrical modifications? Would a 90-92 2wd work, or even a 93 or just 94, retaining the original wiring harness? engine is cooked electrical is all fine, the truck only has 135xxx km's on it. very nice shape no rust really wanna find a good engine for it. dont wanna do difficult mod's on this one just a nice bolt in swap. Thx

The early 90's (up to 94) are plug & play. Yer good to go.

so how come when i wanted to do a 4.o swap people told me to get a 90-92? I believe the transmission control is different, but if i find a decent ranger or explorer 90-94 i can just fit it in no wire chopping?
someone wanna back him up? allan d?
note wiring is all the same i believe the timing chain/belt broke

If your "new" Explorer is a 1994 you'd be best served with another 1994 engine.

you could retrofit your stuff onto a 1993 engine, but 1993-94 are the best years
for you... even so on a 1993 you'll need to swap over the engine harness the upper intake manifold the drivers side exhaus manifold and move the cam synchronizer over and reset it...

Beginning to see?

Theoretically you could also swap your wiring and upper intake onto a 1995-95
but they are not quite the same...

The earlier engines are NOT "plug and play" there are serious differences
which have been discussed before.

I see. the 93 was the one i was mostly curious about, but that sounds like a lot of work. another quick one, does 94 ranger and 94 sploder have same 4.0? we already found a 4.0 sploder engine for it 200 bucks with 200xxx km's so that goin in. but the new body style was not accompanied by new advancements?

There are "advancements" but you can "roll some of them back" to make the '95-96 engine work....

A Ranger Engine CAN work but you've gotta be careful, not all 1994 Rangers have EGR and SEFI and you'd be into the same situation as with a 1993 Explorer engine
