Does anyone know how much oil pressure is needed to start a 6.0 Powerstoke?

the guy at the dealership said 1200 but i dont think thats even possible

I don't have a manual that covers the 6.0 but here is an excerpt from the 7.3L factory service manual:

During initial start or cold start, the high-pressure oil pump (6600) receives unfiltered oil from the left side valve lifter oil gallery through the anti-drain back check ball valve. Once the engine starts or during warm engine starts, the check ball closes and the high-pressure oil pump receives filtered oil from the high-pressure oil pump reservoir. The high-pressure oil pump pumps the oil under extremely high pressures 4,115-20,577 kPa (600-3,000 psi) through the left and right side high-pressure supply hoses to the high-pressure oil rails (integral to the cylinder heads). Once in the oil rail, the oil is fed to the fuel injector bores through four oil feed galleries drilled and machined in the cylinder head. The high-pressure oil then actuates the fuel injectors.

And here's what it says about the oil pump specs:

Oil Pump, Oil Cooler and Oil Capacity Engine at Normal Operating Temperature Engine Oil Capacity Oil Pump Drive Gear Radial Clearance Oil Pump Drive Gear End Clearance
Oil Pump Pressures Liters U.S. Qts.
Curb Idle 3,300 rpm
69 kPa (10 psi) 276-482 kPa
(40-70 psi) 12.3 13.0 a 0.71-0.81 mm
(0.028-0.032 in) 0.02-0.08 mm
(0.001-0.003 in)

Sorry it doesn't format very well from the table, but it says 40-70 psi for the oil pump on a 7.3L.

It isn't for the 6.0, but some of the specs might give you an idea of what it should be.

No, that sounds about right.

The lube pressure only needs to be a couple dozen pounds.

The HP system that runs the fuel injectors needs to be up around 1200 PSI.

Lube oil pressure: 12 psi at 700 rpm, 24 psi at 1,200 rpm and 45 psi at 1,800 rpm with engine at operating temperature

Copied from the D&O section of the 2005 F-250 - 550 6.0L service manual:

The engine uses an electrohydraulic injector as part of its fuel system. This PCM/FICM-controlled injector uses high-pressure lube oil to provide the necessary force to inject fuel into the combustion chamber at pressures up to 21,000 psi at rated horsepower

I couldn't find a high pressure spec, but I know the 6.0 uses HUEI injectors that use high pressure oil to push down on a pintle that acts on an amplification chamber that creates the 21000 PSI fuel pressure and that the HP oil system runs over 1000 PSI.

Well think about it, you have a .8L cylinder crammed full of air that is already compressed by the turbo when the intake valve closes, then your piston starts coming up and your 6.0 is running ~ 20:1 compression, and you still gotta shoot that fuel in there which is just compressing it more, and you can't let any of that air get into the fuel system where it can cause cavitation and injector damage, so its gotta be high pressure.

There is a reason you are supposed to discharge the fuel system before servicing it.

interesting. thanks for the info. even by buddy going for diesel tech didnt know.
