Ok I'm in the process of narrowing a Superduty Dana 60, and if I can ever get a chance while I'm home(I work 21 and 7!!!!) to go get my 10.50 I'll be narrowing that as well. As you can imagine I have a ton of crap to do while I'm in so I only get a day or two in my shop. I try to take pictures and then I post progress at work.
Ok this is what they will be going into eventually. Its not gonna be a hardcore rock crawler or anything, just a daily driver/mall crawler that I can go mud riding and run light trails(only type of trails in south la). I already know I'm gonna get flamed for a few things I plan on putting on it but oh well.
Here's the axle sitting on jack stands ready to be violated.
I stripped it down to a bare housing and removed the axle shafts, be prepared to do some prying to pull the shafts through the knuckle with the seals on. Then I got to work with the 7" grinder, grinding the weld around the "c" until I could see the crack where the metal was separated and after a relentless beating with a BAMFH it never budged, so I cut the tube with a cut off wheel and persuaded the piece out with the hydraulic press. Finally!!!
Before stripping it I determined what width I wanted and settled on a 6" chop giving me roughly 1.5"-2" of tire sticking out. Set up the chop saw and away she went!!!
Now came the fun part!! Lining up the "c" can be tedious, especially on jack stands! I know, I know!!! I ran out of square tubing to finish my axle stand and metal yard is a hour away, and beings I'm too nervous/impatient/hard headed I said screw it and decided to keep going. Anyways, I've got it squared up and tacked it in.
When I come back in I'm gonna burn it in. Still have a few Ni 99 rods, preheat it to around 500, weld it, and then bury the end in sand so it can cool slowly. I know its not much to look at, let's just call it a conversation starter!
