What is this? Its on the passanger side of a 94 M5R1 4x4 4.0L tranny, there were two wires and a 2 pin connector attached to it but as I was pulling it out it got tore off. I have no idea how they were connected it appears to have been broken already and theres some sort of spring underneath all that white putty.

Is it gonna be vital or can I finally get my tranny back in?

Its, either the backup light switch, or the neutral sense switch. One will make the backup lights not work (not a big deal unless your state requires them for inspection), the other will make the truck not start. Either way, I'd fix it while it's out. Both sensors are only about $12.

I know it's one of the two, I can just never remember which one goes on which side, but I'm kinda leaning towards it being the NSS.

Can anybody confirm that its the NSS? And possibly get me a p/n i just took a look and they got something on o'reillys for 60 bucks which doesnt sound quite right

I'm working on that. FMCdealer is being a pain in my butt tonight.

Definitely NSS.

Reverse light switch is on the DS and it's red.

Ok, got the wiring diagrams on FMCdealer to work. That is in fact the neutral sense.

$60 sounds high for this part. It sounds about right for the neutral safety switch. They are two different things that people often get confused for the similarity of the names and functions.

Still no luck on finding the correct part. Actually going to the parts store may help in that regard. Being able to explain to the guy what you need will help in finding it. You just can't do that with a web site.

There should be a 2 wire connector near there that it would plug into. If you absolutely can't find one, just cut the wires off the connector and splice them together. Should work just fine that way.

nss= neutral safty switch
NSS=neutral sensing switch
between $50 and $60 each

Definitely NSS.
both trans units have a red 2 prong connector for reverse lights. The older trans oddly enough has one extra connector that runs into the same trans harness on the car, and this is for the NSS (Neutral s Switch/Sensor). Its 2 prong as well.

Ok then, so I have my new tranny with a broken switch and my old one with the one I broke on it. So since the reverse and neutral switch both have a two prong connector can I just pop out the reverse switch off my old tranny and put it in the socket where the nss goes? Im guessing probably not but I might as well ask right?

Edit: took a look at it they wont switch two different sizes, i guess ill just try soldering on the connector and see if it works

$31 each

Where the heck are you looking? NAPA quoted me $60 my price for the nss.

ADSM reason I'm mistaken the price is about $ 54

Dang. I was hoping that you'd legit found one at that price. I have the auto trans shorting bar in there now, but I wouldn't mind getting a new one.

Actually if you run without it on an EEX4 vehicle you'll probably never miss it.

What????

:icon_confused:

Ok, I'm confused. I replaced my blown tranny with an older one. The older one has this sensor on the passenger side. The tranny I took out does not. What does the passenger side sensor do? I dont notice anything not working and this switch is not hooked up.

If your old trans didnt have this sensor, then you dont need to wire it in.

I've taken apart a manual trans harness before, the neutral sense wires were just soldered together from the factory. I swapped my automatic to a M5OD and just soldered the neutral sense wires together (the automatic has a neutral switch in the range switch) and it works great.

The neutral switch is probably mostly for 4x4 Low transfer case switching, since the BCM wants to see neutral before it engages 4x4 low.

X2 on that fix. This is one of those "pointless" switches like the clutch start switch. Just jumper the wires and be done with it.
