Name that sound?

2001 Ford Ranger 3.0 4x4

Unsure what this sound is...best way I can describe it is a click sound (similar to what a heating element does when it’s pre-heating/maintaining heat in an oven/stove).

Should be able to hear it in both videos.

I couldn't see your A/C compressor. Do you have climate controls in a setting where the A/C is on and cycling? If I remember correctly, those settings on the older Rangers were the A/C positions and the defroster positions. Newer Rangers, the split vent/floor setting turns it on too.

Just throwing it out there since that sounds like what my A/C does when it's cycling.

Most Domestic vehicles have the A/C on with the defroster to clear the window sooner and better.

Confirm it. Look for the A/C compressor and see if the sound matches the cycling of the clutch turning on and off. I might be right or I might be wrong. I'm just some guy on the internet. "Trust but verify."

That's the AC compressor clutch cycling. On defrost, the compressor runs to cool and dehumidify the air and the heater core reheats it so you have hot, dry air to get the moisture off the windshield.

Sounds like it is short cycling due to being low on charge, or its really cool/cold where you are and not taking much to pull the low side pressure down.

Fun fact: the vacuum controls default to defrost if a vacuum line breaks for safety reasons so you don't have a windshield you can't see out of if the controls die.
