NAIAS Debut Tomorrow?


Being a rough display truck I wouldn’t take any underneath photos as ghospel.

2.3 sounds like a good engine, plenty of power in all the right places for that size of truck. Will crush any previous ranger engine.

Nice to see real tires, hopefully they stay... probably not for mileage ratings though.

Yeah, no telling on the bottom. Let's hope they tell us more tomorrow. Maybe those tires will be OEM on the Fx4 version?

'18 Explorer uses the same 2.3 Ecoboost, too. And the quoted power levels were from the Explorer. Given another year before the Ranger is out; I'm not overly worried about engine issues.

Looking at Ford's web page - the Supra wake boat they show being towed is 6,700lb+; that lead me to look for the trailer brake control or at least where they would put it; not seeing any place.

The integrated brake controller is every bit as good as any of the 3rd party controllers and I like the esthetics of OEM (Yes, I broke down an bought an F-150 while waiting for the new Ranger). Trailer mirror option would be nice too; although aftermarket is filling that market for F-150 as buying OEM mirrors through the part's department is exorbitantly expensive. Backup system isn't in my top 10, but then I've been putting the boat into the lake for 35+ years.

Rear axle in the pictures is similar of the Global Ranger's - removable carrier. Colorado's Dana M220 is Salisbury. Wonder if that is the final differential or not..

Looks like the only engine/trans they have announced is the 2.3L I-4 EcoBoost with a 10-speed auto. I will wait judgement until I see some road test results and comparisons with V6 competitors. All I can say is I am not surprised but this is not what I was hoping for. On the bright side the EcoBoost engines have been pretty easy to tune for big power increases. I guess we'll see...

Can't understand why you don't like the 2.3. Ever had one ? Pretty much bulletproof old standards and I can't imagine why the new one isn't even better.
 
I'll respond to things I read on our Facebook page;

It will have the 2.3 ecoboost. The 2.7 provides plenty of pier for the F150. This isn't the old 2.3. Have faith.

It will not come out with a manual, but if you're familiar with the newer Ford's, it will have the manual mode with the Bettina on the side of the shifter to manually shift up and down.

The truck has the option of a locking rear differential with the locker activated at the 4wd switch.

It will come with a Dana rear axle.

Has terrain management to adjust output at the wheels based on the terrain and need

A traverse control to control decents

Cab on fully boxed frame

There are some things that they couldn't release information on such as MPG, gear ratios, obviously price, and a few other things we inquired about.

They are very much aware that they need to make this affordable and not put it in the price range of an F-150

I think those of you that are skeptical would change your minds if you saw it in person.

I'm sitting at the airport waiting for my flight. I know fastpakr Has taken a bunch of photos so I'll have to see what we have and what we've already posted
 
6 lug wheels? what size rims-17's? would be neat to see it in person, super short bed though.
 
The bed is bigger than it looks. 5 feet in the crew cab, 6 with a supercab.

So was the axle under the 'show truck' an intermediate between the global Ranger and the North American one?

The bolt pattern on Global Ranger is 6x5.5*; 215/70R16 - base 4x2, 255/70R16 - base 4x4; 265/65R17 on XLT, 265/60R18 on Wildfire; my money says those will be close to NA Ranger sizes.

*I could foresee pattern changing to the 6x135 size found on F-150 - better aftermarket support.
 
The Rangers at the show were put together to see the body and interior. It wasn't announced officially, but up close we learned that both were sporting fiberglass bodies on top of an axle and frame setup purely assembled to get it out there. When pressed for details on the production driveline, they made it clear that they weren't ready to announce that yet. Getting a narrowed F150 axle would be great in my opinion.
 
looking at the frontier, taco, and Colorado..... its a tough segment to challenge from far beyond the herd....


when the plan is to be number one not just enter the herd, I expect to see some changes and serious options.



theres some hot rod stuff for it. with some time...... possible raptor type critter along with suspension and engine options.

caught the chassis and rear axle not being like the proto types running wild on the streets around here...and they fessed right up. I know it confused me:icon_twisted:

the crew on the rotunda side of southfield working on its sibling were much better to communicate with.

if you have not driven anything with the 2.3 ecoboost....I can see being concerned. but it is an impressive powerplant.

They said aluminum hood and tailgate and everything else steel.

I think it was mentioned earlier on here about the integrated brake controller, they said no.

My 2002 F-150 has a tow rating of 6700lbs, a Taco is 6500lbs, a Colorado is over 7k... being well into the fullsize of yesteryear realm I think it would be a nice option. Oh well, as long as they don't change the connector I could pull the one out of my '150 and plug it into the Ranger if I happen to sneak up on one. It will be prewired for a brake controller.

I love that they put a steel front bumper on it, plastic fascias on both the T-6 and Taco were concerning to me how painted plastic would hold up against brush and cornstalks.

The orange Lariat crew cab had 18" AT's on it.

Silver Supercab had the chrome appearance package that gained it the chrome grille surround, fender vent, chrome tip and wheels. I like that they didn't go nuts with the chrome like they have been on the F-Series.

Seriously guys, this truck is a thing of beauty. :icon_thumby:
 
Eh... warning, diatribe ahead.

No single cab with a 6' bed? Lame. No manual transmission? Lame. I like the 2.3 Ecoboost. I dislike the Colorado/Tacoma rear doors, the Tacoma grill and headlights, and the Nissan fenders.

It really has the looks of a copy paste Tacoma. :dunno:

I know they wanted to differentiate it from the F-150, but I had really hoped they would have taken some styling cues from it to make it look like a Ford truck, and not a Toyota/Nissan. I don't think it's bad looking really, just not Ford Ranger looking.

This makes me worried for the Bronco.

Guys, the basic body styling of the T6 Ranger has been around since 2011. So, if anything, all the others are really a copy of the Ranger.
