Hey guys, i have a problem. My 1990 2.9 started making a whining noise that i thought was just a clutch, then i was told that the noise is most likely the transmission. Well, needless to say i pulled the tranny and replaced it with my spare laying around. DIDN'T WORK!!! so after that, all i could think of was the rear end so i replaced that too. DIDN'T WORK!!! after all the busted knuckles and beer, it still didn't work. Anyways, i'm lost. the only other thing i can think of is the freakin pilot bearing but that doesn't make sense beeing that the noise only happens while in gear. It sounds like some bearing going out and it gets louder and louder with the rpms. nothing in particular sets it off, but most of the time it starts whining in first gear and sometimes goes through third. Every once and a while it will chirp on me at highway speed.

any thoughts?
thanks in advance

could be a bad hub, where does the noise come from?

An rpm dependent noise in gear?

Does the noise disappear when you push against the clutch pedal?

I suspect it does because it sou
nds like a clutch release bearing.

i just had the hubs replaced, the u-joints replaced, and the noise still happens when the clutch is pressed in. so it wasn't the hubs and i dont think it is a cluctch issue

If you're still looking, have you checked out the distributor with a stethoscope to see if the noise is coming from there? Sounds like you suspect that it's coming from somewhere near the bellhousing.

yes, it sounds like it is coming from the bell housing but the noise only happens when the vehicle is in motion. how do i listen to it while moving? that sounds like one hell of a trick.:dntknw:

Jackstands and a helper with common sense and safety foremost in your every action. Like don't crawl underneath while it's spinning 55mph.
Get it up to speed and shut the motor off and look and listen.
