Newbie here: Need a little advice on what to do with a cracked transmission case and 3 snapped off bolts on passenger side as well. Bought this economical truck 6 weeks ago and test drive was fine as far as I could tell. Figured with only 20,600kms I`d pass on an mehanical inspection. Have put 400kms on it so far as a pleasure driver. Shifter has been getting harder and harder with each passing day. Thought I would check the trany fluid and see what`s up. The oil level was fine, but BIG SURPRISE, I noticed 3 bolts on passenger side of trany ( as far up as I can see without getting mirrors and lights out ) are snapped off and there is a 12 inch crack on the drivers side of the case going from top to bottom just behind the slave bleed valve which is loose as well. There is no oil leaking out of the crack YET. Looks like someone was in a rush with a clutch job or something. Could this have been done on the assembly line and hidden from inspectors or what. There is lots of warranty on this truck yet as was purchased originally July 14 2007. Original owner said it had never been in an accident. I didn`t ask if any major work was done. What would you do? I like the truck as it is very handy and economical.

War-rant-tee !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I second what he said!

Would you like to see some photos?

Got some great pix of the above problem, but as of now my attachment button has not shown up as I just joined the site last night. Does anyone know how long a new member has to wait for this feature to be enabled. I would like to introduce myself as well with pix in the newbie forum.

How could something like this happen? Where are these Canadian bought trucks built?

I know I posted original twice but don`t know how it happened. Give me a break, I`m new here and was in a bit of shock yesterday, with my big surprise and all.

goooooooood pics of the problem! man.....if everybody would post like that...including me!

yep....looks like a rookie forced it together/snapped the bolts/cracked the case/ or the factory did Something spectacular....my 2 cents......

Yes, I`d have to agree on both counts. Can anyone with the 2.3L 5spd check if their slave bleeder valve is loose like mine. I was able to wiggle it about 1/16 inch or more in all directions. Are these trany cases built like an oil tanker ship with the double hull, because I`m wondering why the crack hasn`t started leaking yet. Are these cases so expensive that they would repair (weld) it from the inside before installing the gears?

Also on a related note: My first inkling that I had a problem was when I could hear loud vibration noises comming from passenger side of vehicle (same side where bolts are snapped off) when going over slight road bumps, like the door is ajar (open) so I`m thinking front shock absorber is bad. Only audible on the passenger side, the drivers side is tight and firm and barely audible as it should be. Of course, my prepurchase test drive was taken without plates or insurance, and so limited to the immediate new cul-de-sac road surfaces. At first I thought this truck might have been crashed and repaired, although the MVA report wasn`t showing anything. So I took a magnet and went over the entire vehicle checking for bondo with a negative result. The passenger door seemed noisy so I adjusted the latch inward about 1/8 inch, and still have the noise when going over small bumps. Now I`m thinking it`s the tranny bouncing around underneath causing the vibration and noise. As well the shifting has been steadily deteriorating and feeling funny now.

I did notice the shifting was a bit off (ie; not as smoothe as butter) on my prepurchase testdrive but at the time, reasoned it is normal and not a new vehicle anymore. The folks used to say, "If you live long enough, you`ll see everything". Ha Ha

Update

Just got back from the dealership as above issues are warranty related and was told the following at check-in:
I would have to pay for a 23-POINT VEHICLE INSPECTION, $39.95+taxes as some of the issues I wanted checked might be no fault items and is a way for them to get payment for their time. ( Now, from years of experience, I am not a big fan of having a stranger poke and prod under my hood and for good reasons, however, so be it. UUGGH. )

The issues were resolved by the following:

Bolts are proper length for this vehicle.

What appears to be a crack on the drivers side of the transmission is actually a casting flaw.

Passenger side front of vehicle is noisey over small bumps, seems like door is ajar: Found noise on roadtest, seems to be more so on speed bumps or slightly larger bumps of this nature, checked tightness of door hinges / door striker all seems ok, lubed door latch, could not find a fault or defective part. Noise is quite normal.

For some reason the service advisor never wrote up the "front wheel bearings loose" issue which I advised him upon check-in. But was later noted on 23- point inspection as had been checked and having some play in front wheel bearings and requires future attention.

Shifting issue: Test drove vehicle, shifted normally, if problem returns, recomend customer test drive with shop foreman.

It seems kind of redundent to do a 23 point inspection as I advised I had just completed the full 20,000km maintenance schedule last week. But was done again however.

My fault about the tranny bolts, they are there and for some reason are installed from front to back and therefore not matching the drivers side which were easily visible.

I was relieved to learn that the crack in the tranny case was only a flaw. But am perplexed as to why I paid good money for a flawed vehicle.

Noise on passenger side of vehicle when going over small bumps is apparently normal and possibly another flaw. They may have adjusted the stricker as noise is a bit less noticeable at the door.

I would have thought they would have fixed the wheel bearing issue I noticed while rotating the tires rather than just noting it again upon inspection.

Shifting issue was rectified, for the time being, possibly they did an adjustment here.

Their shuttle service was quick, curteous and excellent overall although their dispacher and driver did not know where a MAJOR CITY PARK entrance was in which I spent my day waiting and appeared not to own a map, although after several minutes on the cell phone with the dispacher and driver this issue was solved.

I wouldn`t recommend being a proud owner and detailing a vehicle before taking it into the dealership as I did. I found I needed a complete wash upon getting it home. Possibly from the pond like depression in the driveway behind the building which had no sump pump in place. There was tons of grit on and beside the floormats, so I vacuumed again and a new slight door ding which I can not be 100% sure wasn`t there before, but am pretty sure it wasn`t as I just detailed with tar remover and spot wax throughout and made drawings noting damage to body panels before entering check-in. Found four new chips in paint on drivers front steel wheel as probably didn`t use a rubber sleeved tire iron to remove the plastic chrome centre cap or a few slips with the impact driver when working the wheel lugs. This was my first experience bringing a vehicle to a dealership and I will be more mindful next time when using a different dealership! Luckily in a city of 1.2 million, there are several to choose from.
