My, scratch that... Now my DAUGHTER'S 1987 Supercab 4x4

Nice Ranger ! I like the way you painted the grille and trim on the front of the truck. I think the flares, visor and fastback look great on the on your Ranger.

Thanks! It actually turned out looking even better than I'd hoped. Everything just seemed to come together in the end.

Thanks for the TOTM nomination as well! I know she'd be thrilled if it wins.

She still has it and is driving it daily. She was a bit nervous about driving it during winter with all the salt they use up here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. But I told her that I built it to be driven. If I have to touch it up here and there each summer to keep it looking nice, so be it.

She plans to drive it as long as she can. She likes the fact that she's driving her own customized, lifted 4x4 with a 5-spd manual transmission. Especially since most of the boys in her grade are in front wheel drive cars with automatics. :)

Nice build! Now what are you going to do? Find another first gen for yourself?

I just creamed my pants.

Well, unfortunately my time/money is going to be tied up for awhile renovating an old farmhouse that I bought. Very solid house, but in desperate need of a facelift inside and out.

I do have my eyes on a 1982 Jeep J10 that's identical to the one from the movie "Twister". It has the same paint, same graphics and same brushguard/rollbar.

It's sitting in a field with no motor, but is the exact same as the one in the picture except for the lift. The body is in amazingly good shape for a truck that old up here. If I do pick it up, I'll put a Hemi in it from a modern Dodge truck.

Well, both my daughter and the Ranger are off at college now. I'm still shocked at how quickly the time went by from when she was crawling to her first day in college. *sigh* I'm gonna miss having her around.

But at least I was able to get her there in style. I spent a couple of weeks on her truck finishing up (nearly) all of the small items I wanted to take care of before she left, including:

  • Clean and repack the front wheel bearings
  • Regrease the front zerk fittings
  • Get her a full sized spare tire/wheel
  • Install Herculiner bedliner kit
  • Install vinyl tonneau cover
  • Sand/repaint the Fastback mounts (rusting)
  • Sand and repaint both front and rear bumpers
  • Weld, smooth, paint and install her brush guard
  • Repair drivers seat (metal back support needed welding)
  • Finish installing rear gas tank setup
  • Sand/repaint bottom of door skins
  • Repair droopy passenger side mirror

There's probably more to the list than what I can recall off the top of my head, but you get the idea. It was a mad scramble, but I managed to fix the majority of the things I wanted to get at. I'll chip away at the smaller items when she comes home on break.

One snag I'm hitting is finding a replacement shifter boot. Hers is ripped and I simply could not find anyone that sells an exact duplicate. It is a side-by-side one piece rubber shifter for both the transmission and the transfer case. If anybody knows where I can find one, I would greatly appreciate a PM or a link.

Anyhow, here is what her truck looks like at its new home in the student parking lot at her college. You can see the added brush guard and tonneau cover.

Still looking pretty good, if you ask me. :icon_thumby:

Hopefully we can get some REALLY good mud shots of it out at deer camp this year. I keep trying to get a TOTM out of it, but it always seems to finish as the runner up. Maybe some thick mud will help it get more votes. :)

Congrats on getting OTOTM! Both you and your daughter deserve it. Great build and story. :icon_thumby:

Thanks!! She was thrilled to learn her truck has won the OTOTM award. A big thank you to everybody who voted for her. It was quite a nice late X-Mas present for her. :)

Awesome truck.

i do recall seeing it in awe a few times in the parking lot at college on my way to and from class. then i look at my '94 and it becomes insignificant... hahah

always been and always will be a ranger fan.

X2 on all the FWD automatic cars. makes me laugh all the time. :icon_rofl:

well done and congrats

How do you like the Kevlar clutch? And what company makes them?
The kevlar clutch is very smooth. It was a bit more expensive than a standard material disc, but my brother highly recommended I cough up the extra $ for it. The next time I talk with him, I'll see if he can remember what brand it was.

Most people are talking in metaphor when they talk about a bulletproof clutch.

Sass.
