My Rangers 5th shock...

As I poke around on this 96 ranger and to my surprise I find a baby shock on the driver side inner fender a shock... What is this for? It looks like it's supporting the accessories bracket on the front of the engine. And what do I call it and where do I find a replacement one.

4.0 engine? I think it's for NVH, basically a shock for the engine. I don't have one on my 2.3L Ranger, not sure if they put them on 3.0L trucks.

Yea it is a 96 4.0. This is the first time for me to see something like this. Weird lol:icon_surprised:

That's nothing. I helped a friend pick up a late 70's J-truck, by the rear spring hangars the side of the frame had a hole you could fit your fist through.

In the midwest rust belt, that picture is average.
 
My Mercedes diesel has a shock by the motor mount on each side. I guess it has to do with vibration damping. First time I ever saw one on a Ranger.
 
I’m SO glad you posted this, Maiawolf, as the ’92 Ranger I just bought has the same thing and I had no idea whatsoever as to what it might be.

BTW - Nice avatar. Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn is... well, you know. ;-)
 
It is called and "engine vibration dampener. It is specific to the mid-90s 4.0s, and frankly I never felt it was that necessary. I do not have any more engine related NVH on my Ranger and B2, both with the 4.0 and no damper, than I do on the Expedition. The 4-cyl Mustang is by far the worst car in my fleet for that.

You should be able to get them at just about any parts store, although it may have to be ordered in.

Personally, if I were you, I'd be far more interested in fixing that missing sway bar link.

Well, I don't know but the missing coil spring might be more significant....:D

I was going to comment that instead of installing the swaybar link to just remove the sway bar as it's the same kind of extra part as that shock... but that really depends on the use of the vehicle... If you want street handling, leave the sway bar in, if you're OK with body roll, toss it...
 
Just as another note, some Explorers had 6 shocks... I've seen shocks going between the rear diff and the frame rail... I don't remember if any of the 4 explorers I've had have had them (I'm pretty sure the current two don't, I know the white one doesn't) but I've seen it in the junkyard while gathering 8.8 parts in the past...
