When the weather man started saying "lots of snow" a week ago thursday I figured I better chain up the Ranger because it's still running on summer street tires. It's been 7 days now and the Ranger has gotten a pretty good workout.
I really enjoy shifting to 2WD and guning it in first or 2ND gear. When the turbo spools up, the chains ( Yeah, I put'em on the rears) throw out a nice rooster tail of snow.
My only regret is that I didn't have the streets all to myself. There were too many other cars out there to be squireling around.:icon_bounceblue:

your spinning the tires with chains on? :no2:

thats a good way to ruin a set of chains or rip your fenders off when a chain breaks.

Do they throw sparks and shit? Chains arent legal in NJ as far as i know and havent ever seen a pair in use. Are they really that helpfull as i have no experience with them??

they do wonders on snow and ice. i used to chain the front with a really nice set of cables i had while i was still living in alaska. it was the only way i could get up the hill to my apartment some days

I run semi tire chains on my 38s.

Chains work great under many conditions. Most states do not permit them to be used except under conditions that warrant such a thing. (as in the roads are really bad, of course, if they're that bad, most people should just stay home.)

I've run them, and you shouldn't try to spin them and throw rooster tails. If a chain breaks, it will destroy lots of things in a hurry. I spent two winters chained up in an area that got snow by the foot and they plowed the roads once a day plus they never salted anything. Chains were the only way my lil Ranger was going anywhere.

That's also a good way to grenade a rear diff or trans. Sure is fun though! :D

Try hillclimbing with a set of those babies on. A friend and I were doing that when I used to live in B.C. He ended up following behind me too close and the roost I was making shot out both of his headlights! :yahoo:

Only times I've ever seen chains in use here in Jersey is on the USPS Mail trucks.

Yea your right now that i think about it the mail trucks do run chains in the winter. i guess thats cause they go off the side of the road to get to the mail box's tho in the rural area's like mine

I only run chains when we go snow wheelin in 2 to 3 feet of snow

It was really entertaining driving around Yuppie land and seeing the various cars with chains. From the 4x4 Police Expedition with chains on the rear to the minivan with 2 chains on one side only, it's been quite entertaining. I haven't needed them yet and neither has anybody with 4x4 that I know. We figure that if we need chains to get around, then some other moron is probably gonna do something stupid, so we're aren't going anywhere.

Chains work some magic.

But yeah, its a bad Idea spinning tires with chains on. Even if the chains dont break, the will beat the hell out of your driveline. I know it hard to resist, but try to keep it minimal:icon_thumby:

i had a chain break on me when we got all that snow a week ago. i was going to work hung over as all hell and didnt have time to take them off before i left and you can guess what happened. on the plus side, i only have to trim 3 fenders for bigger tires instead of 4. those things sure did grab in that deep snow though, especially for only having 2wd and a 4 cyl, but they dont make the ttb stop plowing snow though.

Points to consider. I put the chains on while the weather was dry. Before I put the chains on I laid them out and made sure there weren't any twists in them. I installed them snug to the tire and used bungee cords to keep everything from flying around. When I did spin'em I did it in an area where the snow was packed about 4 inches thick.
The last 6 days, Chains were mandatory in Portland Oregon.
My Ranger is my fifth truck in 30 years. Each truck had a set of chains. My trucks feel naked if they aren't carrying chains.

the loads put on the chains by having a 3,000lbs vehicle on top of them spinning the tires is incredable. it doesnt matter how deep the snow pack is or how tight you installed them...they WILL break and until that happends, it'll beat the crap out of the rest of your drivetrane.

plus, whats the point? spinning tires on ice and snow...whoo hoo :icon_confused:

i just pray one of your buddies rigs isnt behind you when one of them lets go while your spinning.
