Hey everyone. I posted a thread earlier last week asking if I should buy this Bronco II or not, and by a huge margin - the answer was yes. Well, here she is! I got her for $900.

1990 Ford Bronco II
2.9L V6
5 speed manual (it needs a clutch realllly bad)
Auto Locking 4x4
Loaded!
30x9.50 R15 tires

I'm open for suggestions - tell me what you think and what I should do it

Are there any threads that walk you through the steps on how to do a clutch in a 1990 Ford Bronco II? If there is, could someone send the link to me? Any tips or details from people who have done one?

Congrats man!! Looks like a nice B2! :icon_thumby:

I'm not sure if anything is different on the '90, but on my '84 we just unhooked the driveshaft, unbolted the crossmembers, linkage & anything that could be stretched, undid the bell housing bolts, supported tranny & transfer case & slid it back enough to change the clutch. This is just the basic idea............

Someone will be able to offer more detail I'm sure!

After the clutch, lift it, throw meats on it, & go wheelin'!! :headbang:

That is a hell of deal man! Good catch.

If I was going to start over thats what I would look for.Putting in the 4.0 is a snap so they say.I had to put in one of those dashes myself I like a a lot better than the gen 1 style. Some come with dana 35's in them already. That looks like the tall shifting boot that comes on the m50d which tranny does it have if so you really lucked out that would be a lower 1st gear m50d the best for our application in my opinion.Write back in let us know about those two things and ring and pinion ratio.

in order

1. Explorer Axle swap (D35 and 31spline 8.8)
2. locking hubs and a manual T-case
3. herculine everything below the bottom body line (red part down)
4. 4.0L swap
5. 6" lift, 6" flared glass fenders, 35x12.50 tires and 4.56 gears.
6. either exo cage or inside roll cage.
7. Give it to BDAB for Christmas

or you could skip 1 - 6 and just do 7. i can take care of 1-6 myself.

while you have the transmission out to do the clutch you should change the slave cylinder

i would tackle that rust before it punches through. im duking it out on my b2 right now got a big fist size rust hole that was hidden under the paint

First off i would definately sell it to me... No but really congrats that is one fantastic find and I can only see two words when I look at that B2 .....

I hate to say this but you'll have a blast with that transmission lol

I did the exact same thing...bought 90 BII with a bad clutch. My y-pipe to manifold bolts are solid rust (not even six sided anymore, just round) so I had to fish the bellhousing around between the y-pipe and the floorpan. Even better, I've done it twice. After the first 30 minutes of wrestling with it you'll be tempted to cut out the y-pipe with a sawzall and fix it later, but it is possible.

I strongly recommend the upgrade to a 4.0 clutch. You'll need the flywheel, clutch, starter, and the block shim/plate from between the engine and trans on a 4.0 equipped vehicle. It's significantly larger than the 2.9 clutch. I believe there's an article about it in the Tech Library.

Also, while you're working on it, before you even take the transmission out - drain the transmission lubricant. Good chance it's been in there since it left the factory and it will give you a good chance to check out the magnetic drain plug and get an idea of the transmissions condition. Do a search of the transmission subforum and there should be dozens of threads on removing an M5OD.

Draining the fluid is what helped me discover what I found next...and prevented me from re-installing a shelled transmission. Read about that and the most amazing clutch I've ever seen here:

Ended up buying a transmission from a guy for $150, just had to pull it out of an explorer. The 1-3rd gear ratios aren't as good as the 2.9 version but it's temporary until I do a 5.0 swap.

Other things I had to do before getting it back on the road include replacing a leaky water pump, a dead battery, and a rusted through fuel tank that had undergone multiple failed patch attempts. Also installed a manual shift transfer case and gutted all the associated electric 4x4 stuff.

I've been driving it since March or so, wish I'd bought a decent starter instead of the cheapest one I could find on ebay. I've got manual hubs in my garage that I'm waiting to install until I put together the cash to replace the brakes and wheel bearings. I'm also considering throwing on some 2" Skyjacker coils and 6400 shackles at the same time.

Where you at in Ohio?

Clutches are not too bad if you've done it or have someone who has.

i'm jealous. I want one too. I'd paint the outside to match my ranger, but that interior looks awesome. Congrats dude. The only thing I don't love about it is the push button 4x4 and auto hubs. Get a MS case and some mannies one there..

I want a cup holder like urs. I've got the double that the shifter hits anything bigger than a can of pop. The clutch isn't that bad. Just did mine 2 months ago. I agree w the others, definitely replace ur slave when u do ur clutch. U won't wanna pull it again.Nice truck, good luck w it.

excellent find!! after the clutch and slave cyl. are done, i agree with getting the body work done. and if you have a heated garage or shop, i'd do the bed liner on the entire floor inside as well as on the lower outside panels. and also some spray undercoating on everything underneath you can. good luck and have fun with it!!
